The Rise of Esports

Not long ago, playing video games was widely seen as a waste of time. Today, the best gamers in the world compete in packed arenas for prize money worth millions of dollars, while tens of millions more watch online. Welcome to the world of esports.

Esports — short for electronic sports — refers to organised, competitive video gaming. Popular titles include team-based strategy games, shooting games and football simulations. Like traditional athletes, professional players belong to teams, have coaches and follow strict training schedules, sometimes practising for ten hours a day.

The growth of streaming platforms has been crucial to the industry's success. Fans can watch their favourite players live, chat with other viewers and follow tournaments from anywhere in the world.

The global esports industry now generates well over a billion dollars a year, mostly from sponsorship, advertising and media rights. Saudi Arabia has emerged as a major player, hosting the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, which offers one of the largest prize pools in the history of competitive gaming.

This question remains controversial. Critics argue that a sport requires physical effort, and that sitting in front of a screen doesn't qualify. Supporters respond that esports demands exceptional reaction times, hand-eye coordination, teamwork and strategic thinking — much like chess, which is officially recognised as a sport in many countries.

There are also concerns about the health of young players, including eye strain, poor posture and a lack of physical activity. Many professional teams now employ nutritionists and fitness coaches to address these issues.

Whatever your opinion, one thing is clear: esports is no longer a niche hobby. For a growing number of young people, it is a genuine career path.
