Although around 70 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water, less than one percent of it is fresh water for human use. For countries in the Arabian Peninsula, which have no permanent rivers and minimal rainfall, this has long been a defining challenge.

The region's answer has been : the removal of salt from seawater. Saudi Arabia is now the world's largest producer of desalinated water, and in several Gulf states the majority of drinking water comes from the sea. Early plants relied on thermal methods, essentially boiling seawater and the steam. Most new facilities, however, use , in which seawater is forced at high pressure through fine enough to block salt molecules.

is not without drawbacks. It is , and when that energy comes from fossil fuels, it contributes substantially to carbon emissions. The process also produces , a highly concentrated salt solution that, if carelessly, can harm marine ecosystems near the coast.

Engineers are working to mitigate these problems. Newer require less pressure, and pairing plants with solar power could dramatically reduce their . Researchers are also exploring ways to extract valuable minerals such as lithium from , potentially turning a waste product into a resource. Meanwhile, experts stress that technology alone is insufficient: reducing and encouraging more efficient water use remain just as crucial as producing more.
