Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara.
- James
And I'm James. Hello! Today we talk about a happy topic. Breakfast!
- Sara
Yes! Our topic is food. We have one big question. What do you eat for breakfast?
- James
Breakfast is the first meal of the day. We eat it in the morning.
- Sara
Today we have a special guest. Her name is Noura. Welcome, Noura!
- Noura
Thank you, Sara and James. I am very happy to be here.
- James
Noura, tell us about you. Where are you from?
- Noura
I am from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Now I live in Sydney, in Australia. I work as a nurse.
- James
Jeddah is a beautiful city by the sea.
- Sara
Wow, Sydney! That is far from Jeddah. Do you like it there?
- Noura
Yes, I do. The weather is nice and the people are friendly. But I miss my mother's food.
- James
That is a good start. Let's talk about food. Let's talk about breakfast!
- Sara
James, you go first. What do you eat for breakfast?
- James
I am British, so I like toast. I have two pieces of toast with butter and jam.
- Noura
And what do you drink?
- James
A cup of tea, of course. I am British!
- Sara
Only toast? That sounds small. I eat more than you!
- James
Really? What do you eat, Sara?
- Sara
I usually eat cereal with milk. Sometimes I eat eggs and a banana. And I always drink coffee.
- James
Always coffee! I'm not surprised. You love coffee.
- Sara
I do! Coffee is my best friend in the morning. Noura, what about you?
- Noura
My breakfast is different on weekdays and on weekends.
- Sara
Different? How?
- Noura
On weekdays I am very busy, so I eat something quick.
- James
What is something quick for you?
- Noura
Yogurt, some fruit, and a small piece of bread with cheese. Then I drink Arabic coffee or tea.
- Sara
That sounds healthy. And what about weekends?
- Noura
On Fridays in Jeddah, my family has a big breakfast. We eat foul, eggs, bread, cheese and honey.
- James
Foul? Can you explain? What is foul?
- Noura
Foul is a dish of beans. We cook the beans with oil, lemon and a little spice.
- Sara
Oh, interesting. How do you eat it?
- Noura
We eat it with warm bread. It is delicious!
- Sara
It sounds so good. I want to try it!
- Noura
I can make it for you one day. I make foul in Sydney too, on Saturdays.
- James
Please do! I am always hungry, so I will come.
- Sara
Ha ha, you are always hungry, James.
- James
It's true. Big breakfast, big smile.
- Sara
Now, a big question. Is breakfast important? Some people say yes. Some people say no.
- James
I say yes. Breakfast gives you energy. Energy is power for your body and your brain.
- Sara
I agree. When I skip breakfast, I feel tired. Skip means you do not eat it.
- James
Same for me. If I skip breakfast, I am angry at ten o'clock. Then I am starving!
- Noura
Hmm, I have a different opinion. I think breakfast is very important for children. They need food before school.
- Sara
That's true. Children grow, and they study all morning.
- Noura
But some adults are fine without it. My brother never eats breakfast.
- Sara
Really? Why not?
- Noura
He says he is not hungry in the morning.
- James
Never? What does he do?
- Noura
He drinks water, goes to work, and eats lunch at twelve. He feels fine.
- James
That sounds simple.
- Sara
Interesting! So maybe it is different for every person.
- James
Yes. Some studies suggest that people are different. Listen to your body.
- Sara
That is a good rule.
- Noura
Exactly. If you are hungry, eat. If you are not hungry, you do not have to eat.
- Sara
But I think one thing is true. A good breakfast is better than a lot of sugar.
- James
Good point. A big cake and a sugary drink is not a healthy breakfast.
- Noura
At my hospital, the doctors say eggs, beans, milk and cheese are good for you in the morning.
- James
Good advice. I will eat more eggs.
- Sara
Okay, now a fun game. Sweet or salty? What do you like for breakfast?
- James
Sweet food has sugar, like jam, honey and cake. Salty food is, for example, cheese, eggs and olives.
- Sara
Great explanation, James. So you go first. Sweet or salty?
- James
Sweet, for sure! On Sundays, I make pancakes with honey. I have a sweet tooth.
- Sara
A sweet tooth? Please explain it for our listeners.
- James
It means you love sweet food. I eat a lot of sugar. Maybe too much!
- Sara
Ha ha, maybe a little too much.
- Noura
Ha ha! I do not have a sweet tooth. I like salty breakfast. Cheese, olives, tomatoes and eggs.
- Sara
Olives in the morning! In America, that is not common.
- Noura
In many Arab countries, it is very common. Olives, cheese, cucumber and bread. It is simple and fresh.
- Sara
That sounds fresh and light.
- James
I understand, but I cannot eat olives at seven in the morning. I need jam!
- Noura
But there is one time I eat sweet food.
- Sara
Oh? When is that?
- Noura
On Eid morning. I eat dates and sweet cookies with my family.
- Sara
Oh, I love that. Dates are sweet and healthy.
- Noura
Yes! And with Arabic coffee, it is perfect.
- James
Dates and coffee. Lovely!
- Sara
For me, I like both. During the week I want something salty, like eggs and cheese on toast.
- James
Let me guess. Sunday is pancake day?
- Sara
Yes! On Sunday, I make pancakes with strawberries. Yum!
- James
So you are half sweet and half salty, Sara.
- Sara
Yes! I am a mix.
- Noura
I think a mix is a good idea. A little sweet, a little salty, and some fruit.
- James
I agree, but my pancakes stay on the table!
- Sara
Let's travel around the world with breakfast. Noura, do you know breakfast in other countries?
- Noura
Yes. My aunt lives in Cairo. When I visit her, we eat foul and ta'amiya.
- James
Ta'amiya? What is that?
- Noura
It is like falafel. We eat it with bread and salad.
- Sara
Sounds great! My friend is from Turkey. She says a Turkish breakfast is huge.
- Noura
Huge? Why?
- Sara
There are many small plates. Cheese, olives, tomatoes, eggs and bread. And a lot of tea!
- James
In Japan, many people eat rice, fish and soup for breakfast. It was a surprise for me.
- Sara
Soup in the morning? Why not! It is warm and good.
- Noura
What about the United States, Sara? What do people eat there?
- Sara
Many Americans eat cereal, pancakes or eggs. But some people are in a hurry. They eat in the car!
- James
In my country, we have the full English breakfast. It has eggs, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms and toast.
- Sara
That sounds like a lot of food!
- James
It is very big, so we eat it on weekends. Not on a busy Monday.
- Noura
That is like our Friday breakfast. Big and slow, with family.
- Sara
I like that. Breakfast is not only food. It is also time with people.
- James
Very true. Which country do you want to visit for breakfast, Sara?
- Sara
Turkey! I want to taste all those small plates. And you, James?
- James
Egypt. I want to try Noura's ta'amiya in Cairo.
- Noura
And I want to go home to my mother's kitchen. Nothing is better than that.
- James
Now it is time for our Language corner. Today we learn three useful words and phrases.
- Sara
First, skip. We say skip breakfast. It means you do not eat it.
- James
For example, I never skip breakfast. Noura, can you make a sentence?
- Noura
Yes. My brother likes to skip breakfast, but he never skips lunch!
- Sara
Perfect! Second, I have a sweet tooth. It means I love sweet food.
- James
We do not say a sweet mouth. We say a sweet tooth. It is a special phrase.
- Sara
Third, delicious. It means very, very tasty. Foul with warm bread is delicious.
- James
And one more tip. When you are very hungry, you can say, I'm starving!
- Noura
I like it. I'm starving, James. Let's finish soon!
- Sara
Okay, let's finish. Today we talked about breakfast. We heard about toast, cereal, foul and olives.
- James
We also talked about sweet and salty food. And we learned about breakfast in Egypt, Turkey and Japan.
- Noura
And we learned some new words too.
- Sara
So, is breakfast important? My opinion is yes. A good breakfast gives me energy.
- James
I agree with Sara. Breakfast is my favourite meal. Pancakes forever!
- Noura
For me, breakfast is important, but every person is different. Listen to your body and enjoy your food.
- Sara
Well said, Noura. Now a question for you, our listeners. What do you eat for breakfast?
- James
Is it sweet or salty? Think about it tomorrow morning, and try to say it in English.
- Noura
Thank you for having me. It was a lot of fun.
- Sara
Thank you, Noura! Thank you for listening, everyone. Goodbye!
