  5. Reem

Hello Sara, hello James, and hello everyone! I'm very happy to be here.

  6. Sara

Welcome, Reem! Please tell us a little about you.

  7. Reem

I'm from Riyadh. Now I work in an office in London.

  8. Sara

    Nice! Do you like London?

  9. Reem

I do! And I love talking about the weather!

  10. James

Then you are in the right country! British people love talking about the weather.

  11. Sara

    Is that true, James?

  12. James

Yes, it is. We meet a friend, and we say hello.

  13. Sara

    And then?

  14. James

And then we talk about the rain!

  15. Reem

Yes! I learn this very fast in London. Everyone says it's a cold day today.

  16. Sara

Okay, let's start with an easy question. How many seasons are there in a year?

  17. James

There are four seasons. They are spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

  18. Sara

In America, we say fall, not autumn. Fall and autumn are the same word.

  19. Reem

In Riyadh, we have a very long summer. Then we have a short winter.

  20. Sara

And what about spring? Spring is nice. The trees are green and the birds sing.

  21. Reem

In Riyadh, spring is a good time to sit outside.

  22. Sara

    Oh, I like that idea.

  23. Reem

We drink Arabic coffee in the garden.

  24. James

That sounds lovely. What about autumn, Sara?

  25. Sara

In autumn, the leaves change colour. They are red, orange, and yellow. It is beautiful.

  26. Reem

I like to see that in London. In Riyadh, the leaves do not change colour so much.

  27. Sara

Now the big question. What is your favourite season? Reem, you first.

  28. Reem

My favourite season is winter in Riyadh.

  29. James

    Why winter?

  30. Reem

It is not too hot, and the evenings are cool.

  31. Sara

In London, people do not like winter!

  32. Reem

Winter in Riyadh is different. It is sunny in the day. At night, we sit by a fire.

  33. James

That sounds great. My favourite season is summer. I like long days and ice cream.

  34. Sara

Ha ha, ice cream! My favourite season is fall. I like warm sweaters and hot chocolate.

  35. James

So we have three different seasons. Sara likes fall, I like summer, and Reem likes winter.

  36. Sara

Now let's talk about hot weather. Reem, is Riyadh hot in summer?

  37. Reem

Oh yes, it is very hot. In July and August, it can be 45 degrees.

  38. James

45 degrees! That is so hot. In London, 30 degrees is a very hot day for us.

  39. Sara

What do you do in Riyadh when it is so hot?

  40. Reem

We stay inside. We go to the mall.

  41. James

    And at home?

  42. Reem

At home, we sit with the air conditioner on.

  43. James

In Britain, many houses have no air conditioner. People open the windows and drink cold water.

  44. Reem

In Riyadh, we go out in the evening, after the sun goes down. The night is better.

  45. Sara

That makes sense. What do you drink when it is hot, Reem?

  46. Reem

I drink a lot of water.

  47. Sara

    Anything else?

  48. Reem

Yes! I like cold lemon juice with mint. It is my favourite.

  49. James

Lemon with mint sounds very good. I want one now!

  50. Sara

Okay, now cold weather. James, how cold is London in winter?

  51. James

It is usually about five degrees. Sometimes it is zero, and sometimes it snows, but not often.

  52. Sara

Zero degrees is very cold! In some parts of America, it is minus ten, or even minus twenty.

  53. Reem

Minus twenty! Snow is very new for me. It is beautiful, but my hands get very cold!

  54. James

What about rain? Reem, do you like rain?

  55. Reem

I love rain, but in Riyadh it does not rain often.

  56. James

    Really? Not often?

  57. Reem

No. When it rains, the children go outside and play.

  58. Sara

In London it rains a lot. Is that a problem for you?

  59. Reem

A little. Now I always take an umbrella in my bag.

  60. James

Good idea! In Britain, the weather changes very fast.

  61. Sara

    How fast?

  62. James

You can have sun, rain, and sun again in one hour.

  63. Sara

Let's talk about clothes. What do we wear in hot weather?

  64. Reem

In Riyadh, many men wear a white thobe. It is light, so the body stays cool.

  65. James

And what do women wear, Reem?

  66. Reem

Many women wear a light, thin abaya. Cotton is good, because it is cool.

  67. James

In summer in London, I wear a T-shirt, shorts, and sandals.

  68. Sara

I wear a dress or shorts, and sunglasses. Sunglasses are important when the sun is strong.

  69. Reem

Yes, and a hat. In Riyadh, I use a hat or a scarf in the sun.

  70. James

What about cold weather? In winter, I wear a coat, a scarf, gloves, and boots.

  71. Sara

I wear a warm sweater, a jacket, and a hat. And thick socks!

  72. Reem

In London winter, I wear a long coat, a hat, and gloves. I must have gloves!

  73. Sara

Ha ha! Heavy coats are hard. I prefer layers.

  74. James

    Layers? Please explain it, Sara.

  75. Sara

Layers means many thin clothes, not one thick coat.

  76. Reem

    Like what?

  77. Sara

    A T-shirt, then a shirt, then a sweater, then a jacket.

  78. James

That is a good idea. When you are hot, you take one layer off.

  79. Reem

In Riyadh, we need layers too.

  80. Sara

    Really?

  81. Reem

Yes! In the mall, the air conditioner is very cold. Outside, it is very hot.

  82. Sara

Oh yes! That happens to me too. I always take a light jacket to the mall.

  83. James

What colours do you wear in different seasons?

  84. Reem

In summer, I wear white or light colours. In winter, I like dark colours, like blue and black.

  85. Sara

I think the same. I wear bright colours in spring and summer. Yellow and pink are my colours!

  86. James

I wear a lot of grey and blue. Not very exciting, I know.

  87. Sara

What shoes do you wear, Reem?

  88. Reem

In summer, sandals. In winter in London, boots, because of the rain.

  89. James

Wet feet are not nice. Good boots are very important in Britain.

  90. Sara

Now let's compare the two cities, Riyadh and London. Reem, you know both.

  91. Reem

Yes! Riyadh is hot and dry. London is cool and wet.

  92. James

Dry means there is not much water in the air. Wet means there is a lot of water.

  93. Reem

Exactly. In Riyadh, the air is dry and the sky is often blue.

  94. Sara

    And in London?

  95. Reem

In London, the sky is often grey.

  96. Sara

What do you miss about the weather in Riyadh?

  97. Reem

I miss the sun and the warm winter days. In London winter, I need a lamp at noon.

  98. James

Interesting! What is a normal summer day in London for you?

  99. Reem

It is about 22 degrees, so I wear a light dress.

  100. James

    What about the evening?

  101. Reem

In the evening, I take a thin jacket.

  102. Sara

And a normal summer day in Riyadh?

  103. Reem

In Riyadh, it is over 40 degrees. I leave home early and come back before noon.

  104. James

So in Riyadh you plan your day around the weather.

  105. Reem

Yes, we do. And in London, I plan my day around the rain!

  106. Sara

Ha ha! Same thing, different weather. Now, what can visitors do in Riyadh in winter?

  107. Reem

They can walk outside and visit the old city. It is very nice from November to March.

  108. James

For London, I think May or June is best. It is green and warm.

  109. Sara

I agree. Take a small umbrella, though!

  110. Reem

    Always!

  111. Sara

Now it is time for our Language Corner. Today we have three useful words.

  112. James

The first word is layers. We say, wear layers.

  113. Reem

    What does that mean?

  114. James

It means wear many thin clothes, one on top of another.

  115. Sara

The second expression is it's raining cats and dogs. This means it rains very, very hard.

  116. Reem

That is a funny one! Of course, there are no cats and dogs in the sky.

  117. James

The third word is umbrella. You open it over your head when it rains.

  118. Sara

Let's practise. Reem, what do you wear when it is very hot?

  119. Reem

When it is very hot, I wear light clothes, and I drink cold water.

  120. James

Very good! And when it is cold?

  121. Reem

When it is cold, I wear a coat, a hat, and gloves.

  122. Sara

Perfect! Listeners, please say these sentences out loud.

  123. James

One more tip. We say it is hot today for the weather.

  124. Reem

    And for me?

  125. James

For your body, we say I am hot.

  126. Sara

Yes! It is hot means the weather. I am hot means my body feels hot.

عبارة it is hot تعني الطقس.

  127. Reem

That is a very useful tip. Thank you!

  128. James

It is time to finish. Sara, what is your summary?

  129. Sara

Today we talk about the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn or fall, and winter.

  130. James

We learn that Riyadh is hot and dry, and London is cool and wet.

  131. Sara

We also learn that clothes help us. We wear light clothes for heat and warm layers for cold.

  132. Reem

Yes! And do not forget your umbrella in London.

  133. James

Now our final opinions. What is your favourite season, Reem?

  134. Reem

Still winter in Riyadh. But now I also love a sunny day in London in May.

  135. Sara

Mine is fall, with a warm sweater.

  136. James

Mine is summer, with ice cream and a T-shirt.

  137. Sara

Now a question for you, listeners.

  138. James

    Go on, Sara.

  139. Sara

What is your favourite season, and what do you wear in that season?

  140. James

Tell your friends, and practise your English together.

  141. Reem

Thank you for having me. It is fun to talk about my two cities.

  142. Sara

Thank you, Reem! Goodbye everyone, and see you next time.

  143. James

Goodbye, and have a lovely day, whatever the weather!

  144. Reem

    Goodbye!
