Khalid, tell us about you.
- Khalid
I am twenty years old. I am a student at a university in Riyadh. I study computers.
- Sara
Cool! Do you live with your family?
- Khalid
Yes, I do. I live with my parents and my two sisters. We have a big house.
- James
A big house and a big family. Lovely! Let's start.
- Sara
First, a small language point. James says flat. I say apartment.
- James
It is the same thing! A flat is a home in a big building.
- Sara
So many families live in one building?
- James
Yes, exactly. Many families live in the same building.
- Sara
And a house is one home for one family. Often it has a garden.
- James
I live in a flat in London. It is small, but it is nice.
- Sara
What is in your flat?
- James
One bedroom, a kitchen, a bathroom and a small living room.
- Sara
Do you like it?
- James
I do. It is easy to clean and it is near the train station. But there is no garden.
- Khalid
Easy to clean is very good.
- Sara
I live in an apartment in New York. It is very small. My kitchen is tiny!
- James
Tiny kitchens are hard!
- Sara
But my parents live in a house in Ohio. It has a big garden and a dog.
- Khalid
In Riyadh, many families live in a house with a garden. Many people live in flats too.
- James
What is good about a house?
- Khalid
There is more space. We have a living room for the family, and a majlis for guests.
- James
Space is nice.
- Sara
What is a majlis?
- Khalid
It is a special room for guests. We sit on comfortable seats and drink Arabic coffee with dates.
- James
That sounds lovely. In England, guests sit in the living room with us.
- Sara
It is the same in America. Guests sit on our sofa.
- Khalid
For us, the majlis is very important. We say to our guests, make yourself at home.
- James
I like that phrase. It is warm and friendly.
- Sara
Khalid, a house or a flat? Which one do you want in the future?
- Khalid
At first, a flat. After university, I want a small flat near my work.
- James
Really? Not a house?
- Khalid
A flat is cheaper and easier. Later, I want a house with a garden for my family.
- Sara
That is a good plan.
- James
I disagree a little. For me, a flat is always better. A garden is a lot of work!
- Khalid
Maybe, but I love the quiet time in a garden. I sit there in the evening.
- Sara
Now, a question for everyone. What is your favourite room?
- Khalid
My favourite room is my bedroom. It is quiet. I read and study there.
- James
Mine is the kitchen. I love to cook. I make eggs, soup and tea.
- Sara
The kitchen? I do not cook a lot. My kitchen is too small!
- James
So what is your favourite room, Sara?
- Sara
The living room. I have a big window and a soft sofa. I read books there on Sundays.
- Khalid
In my house, the kitchen is my mother's room. On Fridays, she makes kabsa.
- Sara
Kabsa! I want to smell that.
- Khalid
The whole house smells so good. All of us wait in the kitchen.
- James
You see, Sara? The kitchen is the heart of the home.
- Sara
Okay, okay. A kitchen with kabsa is a great kitchen. You win!
- Khalid
We also have a small garden with a lemon tree. In the evening, we sit there with tea.
- Sara
That sounds peaceful. Is there a room you do not like?
- James
The laundry room. Washing clothes is boring!

- Khalid
Ha ha! My mother says my room is messy. I say it is creative.
- Sara
Same here! There are clothes on my chair, and books on my bed.
- James
My room is tidy. I like everything in its place.

And what about your room, Sara?

- Khalid
Plants in the bedroom? Is that good for sleeping?
- Sara
I think so. They make my room fresh and happy.
- James
What is your favourite thing in your room, Khalid?
- Khalid
My bed! It is so comfortable. After a long day, it is the best place.
- James
A good bed is important!
- Sara
Mine is a blanket from my grandmother. It is soft and warm. It makes me think of her.
- James
That is very sweet. Mine is a small radio. It plays old music in the evening.
- Khalid
Can I ask a question? What is your dream home?
- James
A small house by the sea. It has a big kitchen and a garden.
- Sara
By the sea? Why?

- Sara
A view is very important. What else?
- Khalid

- Sara
Of course! Guests are important.

- James
A room for books. I like that idea!

- Sara
My dream home is in a quiet town. It is small and cosy, with a big garden.
- Khalid
I think a big house is better. My family is big, so we need space.
- Sara
That is a good point. But a big house is a lot of work to clean.
- James
I agree with Sara. A small house is easy and cheap.
- Khalid
Maybe. But for me, a home is not only a building. A home is the people inside it.
- Sara
That is beautiful, Khalid.
- James
Very true. A small house with people you love is a great house.
- Sara
Let's go to our Language corner. Today we learn three useful words and phrases.
- James
First, tidy and messy. A tidy room is clean and organised. A messy room is the opposite.
- Khalid
My room is messy. Her room is messy too. Your room is tidy, James!
- Sara
Second, cosy. A cosy room is small, warm and comfortable. A blanket and a lamp make a room cosy.
- James
Third, make yourself at home. We say it to a guest. It means, relax and feel comfortable here.
- Khalid
In Arabic, we say a similar thing. Ahlan wa sahlan. It means welcome.
- Sara
I love it. Khalid, you can say it to us. We are your guests today!
- Khalid
Ahlan wa sahlan! Please, make yourselves at home.
- James
Time to finish. Today we talked about homes, rooms and dream houses.
- Sara
We heard about a flat in London, a house in Ohio and a majlis in Riyadh.
- Khalid
We also talked about our rooms. Some are tidy, and some are messy!
- Sara
My final opinion is simple. A good home is a place where you feel happy and safe.
- Khalid
Well said, Sara.
- James
I agree. And my home needs a kitchen. For me, a flat or a house is fine.
- Khalid
For me, a home is the people inside it. My family makes my house special.
- Sara
Now a question for you, our listeners. What is in your room?
- James
Is it tidy or messy? Try to describe it in English. Say, there is a bed, there is a desk.
- Khalid
Thank you for having me. It was so much fun.
- Sara
Thank you, Khalid! Thank you for listening, everyone. Goodbye!
