Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara, and today we are talking about a topic that is changing schools and universities all over the world.
- James
And I'm James. Our question today is a big one: when students use artificial intelligence for their schoolwork, is it a useful helper, or is it simply cheating?
- Sara
We have two wonderful guests to help us think about it. First, Rania teaches computer science at a secondary school in Riyadh. Welcome, Rania!
- Rania
Thank you, Sara. I'm very happy to be here, and I have to say that my students have strong opinions about this subject!
- James
I can imagine! Our second guest is Ethan, who is studying engineering at a university in Boston, so he lives with these tools every single day. Hello, Ethan.
- Ethan
Hi, James, hi, everyone. I'll be honest from the start: I use AI almost every day, so I'm probably the guilty one in the room.
- Sara
Ha, we won't judge you, Ethan. Well, maybe a little bit. Let's start with the basics. How are students actually using these tools right now?
- Ethan
It's quite varied. Some of my friends ask it to explain difficult ideas in a simpler way, like a patient tutor who never gets tired.
- James
That sounds really useful.
- Ethan
Others paste in a whole assignment and just copy the answer.
- Sara
Ha, I think we all know a student like that.
- James
So the same tool can be a teacher or a shortcut, depending on the person who is using it.
- Ethan
Exactly. Last semester I was stuck on a physics problem at two in the morning. I asked the AI to explain only the first step, and then I solved the rest myself. That felt like real help.
- Sara
Interesting. So you stayed in control of the learning.
- Rania
That is a good way to use it, Ethan. But in my classroom I see the other side.
- James
Oh? What do you see?
- Rania
Last year a student handed in an essay with perfect grammar, but when I asked him what one sentence meant, he could not explain it.
- Sara
Oh no. What did you do?
- Rania
I didn't shout at him. I asked him to explain the main idea in his own words, and it was clear he had never really read the essay.
- James
And what happened then?
- Rania
We talked for twenty minutes, and I think that conversation taught him more than the essay ever could.
- James
That's a lovely way to handle it. Still, it makes me wonder how many students are never caught.
- Rania
Probably quite a lot. Some studies suggest that a large number of students have tried these tools, but nobody knows the exact numbers.
- Sara
So we can't be sure.
- Rania
And the programs that try to detect AI writing are far from perfect.
- James
That's worrying, honestly. A detector that makes mistakes can hurt an innocent student.
- Sara
Right, I've read that those detectors sometimes accuse honest students, especially people who write in a second language. That worries me, because many of our listeners are learning English.
- Rania
It worries me too. A student whose English is simple and careful can look like a machine, which is deeply unfair.
- Ethan
It happened to a classmate of mine from Cairo. Her teacher thought a machine had written her report.
- Sara
Oh no, really?
- Ethan
She had to show all her notes and earlier drafts to prove the work was hers.
- Sara
That must have been so stressful. So keeping your drafts is one simple way to protect yourself.
- Ethan
She told me she almost cried, so now I save every version of my work.
- Rania
Yes, and it's a good habit anyway. Good writing is made in several steps, and the messy steps are where the learning happens.
- Sara
Good writing really is a process, not a single moment.
- James
Let me play devil's advocate for a moment. Calculators were once banned from classrooms too, and now nobody calls a calculator cheating. Isn't AI the same story?
- Rania
It's an interesting comparison, James, but I don't fully agree. A calculator does one small job, and you still have to understand the problem.
- James
Okay, I'm listening.
- Rania
AI can do the thinking itself, because it can plan, write and even argue for you.
- James
Fair point. I suppose a calculator can't write a poem.
- Ethan
I partly agree with Rania, but I think the real difference is what the teacher wants to measure.
- Sara
What do you mean?
- Ethan
If the goal is to learn how to write, then letting a machine write defeats the purpose. If the goal is to analyse data, using AI for the writing might be fine.
- Sara
That's a good point. So it all depends on the learning goal.
- Rania
Yes, and that's the problem. Students rarely know the goal, because we teachers haven't explained the rules clearly.
- James
So there are no clear rules?
- Rania
Many schools still have no policy at all, so AI is a double-edged sword: it can build skills or destroy them.
- James
Is the situation changing in Saudi Arabia?
- Rania
Quite quickly. In my school we now have a simple rule: you may use AI to brainstorm and to check your work, but you must tell me exactly how you used it. Honesty matters more than the tool.
- Sara
I like that. Honesty first, tool second.
- Ethan
That's actually fair. One of my professors lets us use AI, but we must attach the whole conversation to our report.
- Sara
Really? Everything?
- Ethan
It sounds strange, but it made me use the tool more carefully, because I knew he would read everything.
- Sara
I like that. But doesn't it still make students lazy? I worry that we will stop developing critical thinking if a machine always gives us the answer.
- Ethan
I worry about that too, Sara. When I rely on it too much, my own brain feels slower. It's like taking a car for every short trip: your legs slowly get weaker.
- James
I like that comparison. I walked to the shop this morning, so my legs are fine, but my essay-writing muscles are perhaps less impressive.
- Rania
But there is another side. One of my students, Reem, is very shy and struggles with writing.
- James
Please, go on.
- Rania
She practises her English with AI at home and gets feedback, and her confidence has grown a lot. For her, it opened a door.
- Sara
That's wonderful. So for some students it isn't a shortcut at all, it's a ladder.
- Rania
Exactly, a ladder, as long as she keeps climbing it herself.
- James
So where is the line between help and cheating? Can we find a simple test?
- Ethan
Here's mine. If you couldn't explain your answer to a friend without looking at the screen, you have crossed the line. Some friends cut corners and then panic in the exam.
- Sara
That's a clear test. Simple and honest.
- Rania
I like that test. I would add one more: if you would feel embarrassed to tell your teacher how you did it, that is plagiarism, even if no software can prove it.
- Sara
Two excellent tests. And plagiarism, by the way, means presenting someone else's work as your own. That includes work written by a machine.
- James
Let's talk about teachers. If you cannot trust a take-home essay any more, what should schools do?
- Rania
Change the type of assessment. More speaking, more writing done in class, and more projects where students have to explain their choices.
- Sara
Can you give an example?
- Rania
In my lessons I now ask students to present their ideas for three minutes and then answer questions.
- Ethan
I would love that. Speaking tests are scary, but you can't fake understanding when someone asks you a follow-up question.
- Sara
But isn't that unfair to shy students? Not everyone feels comfortable speaking in front of others.
- Rania
You're right, Sara, so we need a mix. Some written work, some spoken work, and some hands-on projects. One single method will always leave somebody behind.
- James
And what about teachers using AI themselves?
- Rania
Yes, but carefully. I use it to prepare quizzes and to create examples at different levels, which saves me hours.
- Sara
That sounds like a big help.
- Rania
I always check every answer, though, because it sometimes makes mistakes and sounds very sure while doing it.
- James
Mistakes, said with confidence. That sounds like me on a Monday morning.
- Ethan
That's true. Once it gave me a historical date that was completely wrong, and it sounded so confident. I only noticed because I checked a book.
- Rania
Exactly. It can sound sure and still be completely wrong.
- Sara
So one important skill for the future is checking information, not just finding it.
- James
Absolutely. I would also teach students how these tools work, so they stop seeming like magic. Once you know they predict words rather than understand ideas, you trust them a little less.
- Rania
Yes, knowing how it works removes both the fear and the blind trust.
- Ethan
I agree, but I would go further. Schools shouldn't wait. My little brother is twelve and he already uses it. Banning it only teaches students to hide it.
- Rania
I disagree a little, Ethan. For younger children, some limits are healthy.
- Sara
Why is that?
- Rania
A ten-year-old needs to practise handwriting and basic maths without a machine first. The rules for little ones can be different from the rules at university.
- Ethan
Fair enough. Age definitely matters. Teachers also have to keep up with the technology, and that isn't easy when it changes every few months.
- James
Now it's time for our Language corner. Today we have three expressions that our guests used. The first one is a double-edged sword. It describes something that has both good and bad effects at the same time.
- Sara
For example, social media is a double-edged sword. It connects us with friends, but it can also waste our time. The second expression is to cut corners, which Ethan used.
- James
To cut corners means to do something in the easiest or cheapest way, usually by skipping important steps. A builder who cuts corners might use weak materials.
- Sara
And the third one is to keep up with something. It means to stay at the same level as new changes. For instance, it's hard to keep up with new phones, because a better model appears every year.
- James
Lovely. Ethan, can you make a sentence with one of them for our listeners?
- Ethan
Sure. If I cut corners on my homework, I might survive this week, but I won't be able to keep up with the next lesson.
- Rania
A perfect sentence, Ethan! You can use these expressions at school, at work and in daily life.
- Sara
Well, it's time to wrap up. We learned that AI can be a patient tutor or a dangerous shortcut, and that honesty and clear rules make the difference. Rania, what is your final opinion?
- Rania
AI is a helper only when students stay in charge of their own thinking. Teachers must change how we test, and we must keep talking with students instead of just punishing them.
- Ethan
Mine is simple: use it like a tutor, not like a ghost writer. Ask it to explain, then close the screen and try by yourself. And always be honest about it.
- James
I'm somewhere in the middle. I think the tool isn't the villain, but lazy habits are. Schools that adapt quickly will do very well.
- Sara
My view is similar. Now here is a question for you, our listeners: how do you use AI when you study, and where do you draw the line between help and cheating?
- James
Thank you so much to Rania and Ethan for sharing your honest stories with us today.
- Rania
It was my pleasure. Thank you for having me, and good luck to all the students listening!
- Ethan
Thanks, everyone. It was a great conversation.
- Sara
