Hello everyone, and welcome back to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara, and today we are talking about a subject that can start an argument in almost any family.
- James
And I'm James. The question is simple, but the answers are not: should homework be banned? Some countries and schools have already reduced it, and many parents are asking whether it does any good at all.
- Sara
To look at this from different angles, we have two guests. Lama is a secondary school teacher in Amman, and she has twelve years of experience in the classroom. Welcome, Lama!
- Lama
Thank you, Sara. I'm delighted to be here, although I should warn you that my students would love me to say yes to a ban.
- Sara
Ha, we'll see about that!
- James
And our second guest is Yusuf, who is seventeen and lives in Jeddah. He is preparing for his final exams, so he knows exactly how homework feels. Welcome, Yusuf!
- Yusuf
Thanks, James. I should say that I have a lot of homework tonight, so this podcast is actually my excuse for a break.
- Sara
Then we promise to keep it entertaining.
- Lama
Let me start by being honest. For years I gave a lot of homework, because I believed that more practice always meant better results. Now I'm not so sure.
- James
That's interesting. What changed your mind?
- Lama
One night, a bright student of mine stayed awake until one in the morning because she had so many assignments. The next day she fell asleep in my lesson. I realised that I was taking away her energy instead of building her knowledge.
- James
That must have been quite a shock for you.
- Yusuf
That sounds very familiar. Last month I had five tests in one week, and every teacher still gave homework. I felt completely overwhelmed.
- Lama
Five tests in one week is far too much.
- Sara
Yusuf, how much homework do you usually have on a normal day?
- Yusuf
Around three hours, and that's before my private tutor comes. I get home at three, I eat, and I don't finish until ten. There's almost no time left for football or for seeing my friends.
- Sara
Wow, that's a very long evening.
- James
Three hours on top of a full school day? That's basically a second job.
- Yusuf
And that's a normal day, not an exam day.
- Lama
Exactly, and the workload is often the teachers' fault. Each of us thinks our subject is the most important one, so nobody checks how much the students receive in total.
- Yusuf
Nobody asks the students either, to be honest.
- Sara
I'd like to defend homework a little, though, as a parent. My daughter Lily is nine, and homework is the only window I have into what she learns at school.
- James
That's fair. I think many parents would agree with you.
- Lama
That's a good point, Sara, and many parents feel the same. But a short conversation about the school day can give you that window as well, without the tears at the kitchen table.
- Sara
Ha, you've clearly met my daughter. I have to admit that last week we argued for an hour about a worksheet on fractions, and nobody learned anything.
- Lama
It happens in every house, believe me.
- James
Here's something I've always wondered about. Homework is supposed to be done independently, but in reality, a child with helpful parents or an expensive tutor has a big advantage.
- Sara
That's a really important question.
- Lama
You've touched on the most serious problem. Homework can increase inequality. A student with a quiet room, a fast internet connection and educated parents will do well, while another student may have to look after younger brothers and sisters.
- Sara
Very true. Not every child starts from the same place.
- Yusuf
I see that at my school. Some of my classmates have tutors for every subject, and their homework is practically done for them. The rest of us feel that we're competing in an unfair race.
- James
That doesn't sound fair at all.
- Sara
And do your parents put pressure on you, Yusuf?
- Yusuf
They don't mean to, but they worry about my grades. Every evening my mum asks whether I've finished everything. I know she's trying to help, but sometimes the question itself makes me tired.
- Sara
I think many parents do that without noticing.
- Lama
Teenagers also need sleep. Experts say they need about eight to ten hours a night, and many of them are getting far less. Some studies suggest that heavy homework is linked to stress and tiredness, which can easily harm learning.
- James
I'll play the devil's advocate here. When I was at school, I sometimes did my homework on the bus, and I turned out fine. Maybe a bit of pressure teaches us to manage our time?
- Sara
Ha, someone has to do it!
- Yusuf
I agree with that, to some extent. Deadlines taught me to plan my week. But there's a big difference between a little pressure and being exhausted every single day.
- James
So a little pressure is fine, but not too much.
- Lama
Well said. Time management is a valuable skill, but we don't have to teach it by giving students three hours of worksheets.
- Sara
So what does the research say? Lama, you've read about this. Does homework actually improve results?
- Lama
The honest answer is that it depends on the age. Some studies suggest that for younger children, homework has very little effect on achievement. For older students, a moderate amount seems to help, but after a certain point, more homework does not give better results.
- Yusuf
That makes sense. A seven-year-old and a seventeen-year-old are very different.
- James
So it's a bit like medicine. A small dose can help, but a large dose might do harm.
- Lama
That's a nice comparison. There is also a popular guideline that suggests about ten minutes of homework for each school year, so a nine-year-old should do roughly ninety minutes at most, and many experts think even that is too much for young children.
- Sara
Hold on. Lily's teacher gives her less than that, and I still think it's a struggle. So where do the ninety minutes come from?
- Lama
It's only a rough guideline, Sara, not a law. Please don't take it too literally. The more important point is quality. Ten minutes of meaningful practice is better than an hour of copying.
- James
I've heard that Finland gives very little homework, but its students still do well in international tests. Is that true?
- Yusuf
I would love to go to school there!
- Lama
Broadly, yes. Finland is often mentioned as an example. However, we should be careful, because many things make its schools successful, such as excellent teacher training and strong trust. Homework is only one small piece.
- Sara
So it's a mixture of many different things.
- Yusuf
I'd like to disagree with the idea of a complete ban, though. Before my maths exam, I needed those practice questions. Nobody can learn algebra just by listening. You have to revise and solve problems yourself.
- Lama
I agree completely, Yusuf. For some subjects, practice is essential. My argument is not that homework is evil, but that it should be purposeful, limited, and chosen with care.
- James
You two are closer in opinion than I expected.
- Sara
So the real question may not be homework or no homework, but what kind of homework.
- James
That would explain why people argue so much. They are all picturing different homework in their heads.
- Sara
Let's talk about alternatives, then. Lama, if you could redesign homework from nothing, what would you do?
- Lama
I would use more projects. Last term, my students interviewed their grandparents about life in old Amman and then presented what they found. They were excited, and they remembered everything, because it was hands-on and personal.
- Sara
That sounds wonderful. I'd love Lily to do something like that.
- Yusuf
We did something similar in science. Our group built a simple water filter from sand, stones and charcoal. I learned more from that one project than from a month of worksheets.
- Lama
That is exactly the kind of learning I mean.
- James
I love that, but let me raise a problem. In group projects there's often one student who does all the work while the others relax. How can that be avoided?
- Lama
A very fair concern. I give every student a clear role, and I ask each of them to explain their part individually. When everyone knows that they will be asked a question, the free riders disappear quite quickly.
- Yusuf
That would have helped in my last group project!
- Sara
Another idea that I like is reading for pleasure. Lily reads before bed, and it doesn't feel like homework at all. Would that count?
- Lama
Absolutely, and reading is probably the best homework there is. Some schools also offer a homework club during the school day, where students finish their work with a teacher nearby. That helps children without quiet space at home.
- James
A homework club sounds like a clever idea.
- Yusuf
I'd welcome that. If I could finish most of my work before I left school, I would have my evenings back. I could sleep, see my family, and maybe even enjoy studying.
- Lama
That's what many of my students tell me.
- James
I wonder whether students would actually use the time well, though. If homework disappeared, some might simply play video games instead.
- Yusuf
Some would, honestly. But free time is not wasted time. Playing football, helping at home and even being bored are all part of growing up.
- Lama
Well said. Boredom can even lead to creativity.
- Sara
It's time for our Language corner. We heard some expressions today that are worth learning. James, can you start with the first one?
- James
Of course. To burn the midnight oil means to work or study very late at night. For example, I burned the midnight oil last week to finish an important report.
- Yusuf
I do that almost every night this month!
- Sara
The second one is a double-edged sword. It describes something that has both good and bad effects. Technology is a double-edged sword, and perhaps homework is one too.
- Lama
And the third is hands-on, which I used earlier. If learning is hands-on, students do something practical themselves instead of only listening or reading.
- Yusuf
Let me try one. Before my exams, I will have to burn the midnight oil, but I hope my teachers will give me hands-on projects, not just worksheets.
- Sara
Perfect sentence, Yusuf! Well done.
- James
We are nearly out of time, so let's hear everyone's final opinion. Lama, you first. Should homework be banned?
- Lama
No, I wouldn't ban it, but I would reduce it and improve it. Less quantity, more quality, and more projects that connect to real life.
- Sara
That's a balanced answer.
- Yusuf
I'm with Lama. Keep some practice for difficult subjects, but give us a balance between school and life. A tired student isn't a good learner.
- Sara
As a parent, I've changed my mind a little. I used to think homework was a sign of a good school. Now I think a good school is one where children come home curious and still have energy to play.
- James
And I started this episode expecting to defend homework, but I'm ending it convinced that the amount matters more than the idea. A little can be useful, but too much is certainly harmful.
- Sara
Now a question for you, our listeners. How much homework do you do every day, and what would your perfect homework look like? We would love to hear your ideas.
- James
Thank you very much to Lama and Yusuf for a lively discussion. Good luck with your exams, Yusuf!
- Yusuf
Thanks, James. And thank you for the break from my homework!
- Sara
Goodbye for now, everyone, and see you next time on Easy Learn Podcast!
