  1. Sara

Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara, and today's topic is something that many of you are probably thinking about right now.

  2. James

And I'm James. For generations the advice was simple: go to university, get a degree, and you will find a good job. But is that still true today?

  3. Sara

To explore it, we have two special guests. Yara is a careers adviser at a university in Melbourne, and she meets students and graduates every week. Welcome, Yara!

  4. Yara

Thank you, Sara. It's lovely to be here. I hear this exact question about ten times a day in my office.

  5. James

I believe it! Our second guest is Waleed, who comes from Amman and now works as a web developer. He has an interesting story, which we will hear soon.

  6. Waleed

Thanks, James. I'm happy to be here. I should say that I'm a little unusual, because I left university before I finished my degree.

  7. James

Unusual is good for a podcast!

  8. Sara

How exciting! But please don't tell us everything yet, Waleed. Let's begin with money, because that worries so many families.

  9. James

Yara, how expensive is university today?

  10. Yara

It depends enormously on the country. In Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, tuition fees can be very high, and many students finish with serious debt. In other countries, education is almost free.

  11. Sara

    That's a huge difference.

  12. Yara

It is. And if someone else pays, like a government scholarship, then the question changes. It's no longer whether it is worth the money, but whether it is worth four years of your life.

  13. Waleed

That's exactly what I asked myself. After two years of studying business in Amman, I realised I was learning a lot of theory, but I couldn't build anything real.

  14. Sara

So did you just walk out?

  15. Waleed

Not quite! I talked to my parents first, and it wasn't easy. My father was worried, because in our culture a university degree is a symbol of success.

  16. Sara

    Parents always worry, don't they?

  17. Yara

That's true in many families, and I respect it. A degree is also a kind of promise. It tells everyone that you can finish something difficult.

  18. James

A promise to the family, and to yourself.

  19. Waleed

I agree, Yara. But I felt I could make that promise in a different way.

  20. Sara

Interesting. A different way to keep a promise.

  21. James

Let's look at the evidence carefully. Some studies suggest that, on average, graduates still earn more than people without degrees. But averages can hide big differences.

  22. Yara

Exactly. A degree in medicine or engineering usually leads to a clear career. Other degrees are less direct, so the subject you choose matters as much as the name of the university.

  23. Sara

I partly disagree, Yara. I think the name of the university matters too, because it can open doors, especially for your first job.

  24. Yara

That can be true in some fields, Sara. But I've met graduates from famous universities who still struggle to find work, because they have no practical experience.

  25. James

So a degree is not a magic ticket.

  26. Yara

No. It's more like a good map. It helps a lot, but you still have to walk the road yourself.

  27. Waleed

I like that. A map, not a magic ticket.

  28. Sara

Waleed, let's hear about your road. How did you learn to be a developer without finishing your degree?

  29. Waleed

I started with free online videos at night. Then I paid for a few courses, which cost much less than a semester at university.

  30. Sara

At night? That takes real determination.

  31. James

And how did you get your first job?

  32. Waleed

That was the hard part. Many companies asked for a degree, and I didn't have one. I finally got a foot in the door at a small start-up, which cared more about my projects than my certificates.

  33. James

    That sounds frustrating, honestly.

  34. Sara

That's a great story. But isn't it risky? Not everyone has the discipline to teach themselves.

  35. Waleed

You're right, and I don't want to say that everyone should leave university. I was lucky to have a quiet room and a good internet connection. Many people don't have that.

  36. Yara

That's an honest point. Online courses are wonderful, but many people who start them never finish them. They need time, support and a clear goal.

  37. James

What about apprenticeships? In Britain they are becoming popular again.

  38. Yara

Very much so. An apprenticeship means you work and study at the same time, and you earn a salary while you learn. Many young people like it, because they avoid large debts and they learn on the job.

  39. James

That's a smart way to start a career.

  40. Sara

That sounds ideal. What's the catch?

  41. Yara

There are fewer places than people want, and some apprenticeships lead only to one kind of job. If you change your mind later, you may need extra training.

  42. James

My cousin became an electrician through an apprenticeship. He was earning money at eighteen while his friends were still in lecture halls. Now he has his own small business, and he's busier than most office workers I know.

  43. Sara

Ha, I believe it! Good electricians are very hard to find in many cities.

  44. Waleed

Skilled trades deserve more respect, especially in the Arab world. Sometimes people think of them as a second choice, but a good technician can earn a very good living.

  45. Yara

I agree, Waleed. It's a question of respect as much as money.

  46. Sara

Let's ask the employer's question. What do companies actually look for when they hire someone?

  47. Yara

I speak with employers often, and they say the same things again and again: communication, teamwork, problem solving, and the willingness to learn. A degree is one way to show these skills, but not the only way.

  48. James

That surprises me a little. I thought employers still wanted the paper certificate above everything.

  49. Yara

For some jobs, like doctors, lawyers and teachers, a qualification is required by law. But in technology, design and many creative fields, a portfolio often speaks louder than a certificate.

  50. Sara

That makes sense. Some jobs need proof.

  51. Waleed

Yes, my portfolio was my CV. When I showed an interviewer a working app, the whole conversation changed.

  52. James

Showing is better than telling, as people say.

  53. Sara

But Waleed, doesn't a degree teach things that an online course doesn't, like how to think deeply and argue your ideas?

  54. Waleed

It does, and I miss that sometimes. At university I met people from many backgrounds, and we had long discussions. You can't copy that from a video.

  55. Yara

That's a really good point. University is not only information. It's growing up, making friends for life, and learning to work with different people. For many students that is worth every penny.

  56. Waleed

Exactly. That social side is hard to replace.

  57. James

Though I would argue you can find some of that outside university too, in clubs, volunteering or sports teams.

  58. Yara

True, but a university gives you a safe place to try things. Many students find their direction only after changing their mind two or three times.

  59. Waleed

I changed my own mind more than twice, so I understand.

  60. Sara

So what advice do you give to a student who is about to choose?

  61. Yara

First, ask why. Do you want a degree for a specific career, for knowledge, or because everyone expects it? Second, check the real costs, including living costs. Third, talk to people who do the job you want.

  62. Waleed

I would add that you don't have to decide forever. You can start university and change direction, or work first and study later. Some of my friends went back to university at twenty-five and enjoyed it much more.

  63. James

Lifelong learning, then, not one big decision at eighteen.

  64. Sara

Now it's time for our Language corner. Today we have three expressions from our conversation. The first one is to get a foot in the door.

  65. James

Waleed used it. It means to get your first small chance to enter a company or an industry. Once you are inside, you can show what you can do. An internship can help you get a foot in the door.

  66. Sara

The second expression is worth every penny, which Yara said earlier.

  67. Yara

It describes something expensive that you are happy you paid for, because it gave you great value. For example, my English course was worth every penny, because it changed my career.

  68. James

And the third one is to learn on the job. It means to learn by doing the work, not before it. A new waiter, for instance, learns the menu on the job in the first week.

  69. Sara

Let's practise. Waleed, can you use one of them in a sentence?

  70. Waleed

Sure. My first job didn't pay much, but it got my foot in the door, and I learned the rest on the job.

  71. Yara

Perfect! You used two expressions in one sentence.

  72. Sara

We're nearly out of time, so let's wrap up. We heard that a degree can be valuable, but it is expensive in some countries, and it is not the only road to a good career. Yara, what is your final opinion?

  73. Yara

A degree is a strong tool, but only if you choose it with open eyes. Think about the cost, the subject and the skills you will build. In the long run, skills matter more than certificates.

  74. James

    Open eyes. I like that.

  75. Waleed

My view is that there are many roads. Mine was online learning, but I still respect people who finish university. The important thing is to keep learning and to build something real.

  76. James

I mostly agree with both of you. University is worth it for some people and some careers, but the pressure to go there automatically should be softer. Choose it, don't just follow it.

  77. Sara

I agree. Now here is a question for you, our listeners: what is the best way to learn, in your opinion? A university, an online course or an apprenticeship? Tell us why.

  78. James

Thank you, Yara and Waleed, for your honest advice and your stories.

  79. Yara

Thank you both. And good luck to everyone who is choosing their path right now!

  80. Waleed

Thanks, everyone. Keep learning, in whatever way works for you.

  81. Sara

Thank you for listening to Easy Learn Podcast. We will see you next time. Goodbye!

  82. James

    Goodbye, everyone, and take care!
