Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara, and today we are talking about something that many of us dream about on a Monday morning.
- James
And I'm James. We are talking about the four-day work week. Would you like to work only four days and still be paid for five?
- Sara
To help us understand it, we have two wonderful guests. First, Saud is the founder of a small software company in Amman. His team tried a four-day week last year.
- Saud
Thank you, Sara. I'm excited to be here. My team joked this morning that I should never go back to five days.
- James
And our second guest is Claire. She is a hospital nurse and a healthcare trainer who lives in Dublin, so she will give us a very different point of view.
- Claire
Thanks, James. I love the idea, but I have a lot of questions about how it could work in my world. Hospitals never close, after all.
- Sara
Let's start with the big picture. Saud, this is not just a few small experiments, is it? Countries are testing it too.
- Saud
That's right. Iceland ran some very large trials a few years ago, with thousands of workers in offices, schools and hospitals.
- Sara
And what changed for those workers?
- Saud
Many of them moved to around 35 hours a week, and the reports said that productivity stayed the same or even improved.
- James
Wait, that's hard to believe. Fewer hours, and the same results?
- Saud
That's what the reports said, James. And Britain had a big trial too, in twenty twenty-two, with dozens of companies.
- James
I remember that one. If I remember correctly, most of those companies wanted to keep the shorter week afterwards, which surprised a lot of people.
- Claire
I also remember a technology company in Japan that tested a long weekend and reported a big jump in productivity. Of course, companies like to share good news, so I always read those results carefully.
- Sara
That's a fair point, Claire. And what about our part of the world? I know the emirate of Sharjah moved its government workers to a four-day week a few years ago.
- Saud
Yes, and people in Jordan talked about it a lot. Some of my friends were jealous. Honestly, that news was part of the reason I decided to try it in my own company.
- James
So tell us, how did you do it? Did your staff simply stay at home on Fridays and hope for the best?
- Saud
Not at all, and that's the first lesson. We had to rebuild our week. We cut our weekly meeting from two hours to thirty minutes and stopped sending long emails.
- James
Mornings without interruptions, I would love that.
- Saud
We also agreed that nobody would be interrupted in the mornings, so people could really focus.
- Sara
That's interesting. So the shorter week actually forced you to remove the waste in your day.
- Saud
Exactly. We discovered that a lot of our working day was just habit. People sat in meetings that nobody needed, and then did their real work at six in the evening.
- James
Let's talk about wellbeing now. People say a long weekend makes them happier, but is that really true?
- Sara
That's a very good question. Many of us would like to know.
- James
Or is it just a nice feeling for the first two months, and then everything goes back to normal?
- Saud
That was my worry too. But in my team, the change lasted. People slept better, and two of my developers started learning new skills in their free time.
- Sara
Really? That's lovely. What kind of skills?
- Saud
One of them began teaching his children to code on Fridays. Another one built a small garden on his roof, and he brings us tomatoes now.
- Claire
I believe that, because rest matters so much. In healthcare we see burnout everywhere, and burnout is expensive.
- James
That's true. I have seen it happen in offices too.
- Claire
Tired people make mistakes, they get sick more often, and eventually they leave the job.
- Sara
Some studies suggest that companies can save money when fewer people quit, because hiring and training new staff is so costly.
- James
I'll play the sceptic for a moment, though. Isn't it possible that people simply work harder and faster for four days, and end up more stressed on Thursday than they used to be on Friday?
- Saud
That's a real risk, James, and we saw it in the first month. Some people were running from one task to another.
- Sara
So how did you fix the problem?
- Saud
We solved it by giving everyone a clear list of priorities, and by saying that it was fine to finish something on Monday.
- Claire
I agree with James a little. If you simply squeeze five days of work into four, it can feel like a trap. The idea only works when the work itself changes.
- Sara
Saud, what about your customers? Did anyone complain that your company was closed on Fridays?
- Saud
Only one customer, and he was happy after we explained that we have an emergency phone line. Customers cared more about good work on time than about the day of the week.
- James
Now, Claire, you promised us difficult questions. Which jobs do you think can never have a four-day week?
- Claire
Well, I wouldn't say never, but it's much harder. A hospital needs nurses and doctors every hour of every day.
- James
That's a very different situation from an office.
- Claire
A patient can't wait until Monday. So the problem is not the number of days, it's the number of people.
- Sara
So the shorter week would mean hiring more staff, which costs money. And there are not enough nurses in many countries already.
- Claire
Exactly. In some hospitals I know, nurses already work long twelve-hour shifts, three or four days a week. They would say they already have a four-day week, but it's an exhausting one.
- James
That's a great example, because it shows the difference between fewer days and fewer hours. They are not the same thing at all.
- Claire
Yes, that difference is really important.
- James
I'd add teachers, too, and drivers, and the people who work in restaurants.
- Saud
I think any job where the customer is standing in front of you is difficult. A shop can't just close on Fridays, because that's when people have time to buy things.
- Sara
But couldn't shops use shifts? Half of the staff could work Sunday to Wednesday, and the other half could work Wednesday to Saturday.
- Claire
In theory, yes, and some places do exactly that. But you need good planning, and more workers for the same hours.
- James
So fairness is a big question here.
- Claire
Small businesses may simply not afford it, so a rule for everyone could be unfair.
- Saud
I agree, and that's why I don't think governments should force it on everyone. Each company should test it and adapt it.
- Sara
Do you mean offices are only the first step?
- Saud
Office jobs are the easiest place to start, but they are not the whole economy.
- James
That's a sensible view. An idea that works for a software company in Amman could be a disaster in a busy kitchen in Cairo. One size does not fit all.
- Sara
It's time for our Language corner, where we explain a few useful expressions from today's talk. James, would you like to start?
- James
Of course. The first one is burnout. It means a state of being completely exhausted, in your body and your mind, because of too much work for too long.
- Claire
I have met many nurses who know that feeling well.
- James
You can say, she left her job because of burnout.
- Sara
The second one is to play the sceptic, which James used earlier. It means to take the doubtful side in a conversation on purpose, even if you partly agree.
- Claire
My favourite is one size does not fit all. It means that one solution is not right for every person or every situation.
- Sara
That's a very useful expression, Claire.
- Claire
We use it when someone wants a single rule for everyone.
- Saud
And I'd add to squeeze something into a short time. It means to fit too much into a small space or period, like squeezing five days of work into four.
- James
Let's return to the personal side. Imagine your boss says that starting next month, you work four days. What would you do with your extra day? Sara, you first.
- Sara
I would spend it outside, I think. I would go hiking, or visit a farmers market, and maybe finally call my grandmother on a weekday when she is not busy.
- James
Very sensible. I would sleep until noon and then complain that the day was too short.
- Claire
I would take my mother for a long lunch, and then try a pottery class. But I want to be honest. When I think about my own job, I feel a little sad, because I know it's unlikely for me.
- Saud
I understand that, Claire. My team used the extra day for family, for errands they used to do in the evening, and for studying.
- James
I think that is the heart of the debate. If only some people get the extra day, and the others work longer to cover for them, then we have created a new kind of inequality.
- Saud
That's true, and I worry about it. But the answer isn't to stop experimenting. We should look for creative ways, for example paying health workers extra or giving them more days off in a different form.
- Claire
I like that. And honestly, I'd be happy with better schedules and more staff. Sometimes the problem isn't how many days we work, it's whether we can predict our week.
- Sara
We're almost out of time, so let's wrap up. Trials in Iceland, Britain and elsewhere suggest that shorter weeks can work, especially in office jobs, when people also change how they work.
- James
But jobs like nursing, teaching and retail face real difficulties, and governments should be careful not to create unfairness. For me, the idea is promising, but not magic.
- Saud
My final opinion is simple. Try it for three months, measure the results honestly, and then decide. In my company, we are never going back.
- Claire
I'm in favour of the idea, as long as nobody is left behind. Let's also find a way to help the people who keep our hospitals, schools and shops running.
- Sara
Now a question for you, our listeners. If you could choose, would you prefer a four-day week with longer days, or five shorter days? Tell us what you think, and why.
- James
Thank you so much to Saud and Claire for joining us, and thank you all for listening. Take a proper rest this weekend, whether it's two days or three.
- Saud
Thank you both. It was a pleasure.
- Sara
