  1. Sara

Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara.

  2. James

And I'm James. Today we are going on a trip, but we don't need a plane.

  3. Sara

We are going to spend a night in the desert!

  4. James

Sara thinks it will be an uncomfortable night. I think it will be wonderful.

  5. Sara

Well, we need an expert. Please welcome our guest, Fahad!

  6. Fahad

Hi Sara, hi James! Thanks for having me. I'm an engineer from Riyadh.

  7. James

And you go camping in the desert every winter, right?

  8. Fahad

Yes, with my family and friends. For me, it is the best weekend of the year.

  9. Sara

Fahad, why do people go to the desert? There is nothing there but sand!

  10. Fahad

That is exactly why! There are no cars, no noise and no big buildings.

  11. James

Quiet is very rare in a big city, I agree.

  12. Fahad

In the city, I am always busy. In the desert, my mind is quiet.

  13. James

I understand that. In Britain, we go to the countryside to feel the same way.

  14. Sara

But a field with green grass sounds nicer than hot sand.

  15. Fahad

In winter, the desert is not hot. In the day it is warm, and at night it is cold.

  16. Sara

Cold? Really? I thought the desert was always hot.

  17. Fahad

Many people think that. But there are no clouds to keep the heat, so the night gets very cold.

  18. James

That is interesting. Some nights, it can be only a few degrees.

  19. Fahad

Yes. In winter, we always wear a thick jacket after sunset.

  20. Sara

How did you first go camping, Fahad?

  21. Fahad

I was seven years old. My uncle took all the cousins in two big cars.

  22. James

Seven! That is very young for such a big trip.

  23. Fahad

I remember I was excited, and I could not sleep.

  24. James

    Was there a tent?

  25. Fahad

Yes, a big tent for the whole family. We call this trip a kashta in Arabic.

  26. Sara

A kashta! I love that word. What does it mean exactly?

  27. Fahad

It is a trip to the desert or the countryside in winter, with food, friends and a fire.

  28. James

That sounds like a perfect plan to me.

  29. Sara

What do you do during the day?

  30. Fahad

We play football on the sand, walk and drive over the dunes. The children run everywhere.

  31. James

Driving on the dunes sounds like fun!

  32. Sara

Okay, I'm interested now. If I go, what should I take?

  33. Fahad

First, take warm clothes. A jacket, a hat and warm socks are very important.

  34. James

I would also take a good sleeping bag and a thick blanket.

  35. Fahad

Yes. And water! You need a lot of water, even in winter.

  36. Sara

What about a map? I think I would get lost.

  37. Fahad

Good question. Never go alone. Go with people who know the desert.

  38. Sara

That makes me feel safer, thank you.

  39. Fahad

And always tell someone at home where you are going.

  40. James

That is smart advice. Safety first.

  41. Sara

Do you take a torch too? I think the desert is very dark.

  42. Fahad

Yes, a torch and a power bank for your phone. Also, in many places there is no signal.

  43. James

No signal? That sounds peaceful to me!

  44. Sara

Let's talk about the best part. What do you eat around the fire?

  45. Fahad

My favourite is kabsa cooked slowly in a big pot. The smell is amazing.

  46. James

    My mouth is watering already!

  47. Fahad

Before dinner, we sit in a circle and drink Arabic coffee with dates.

  48. Sara

Mmm, I would love to try that.

  49. Fahad

The coffee is hot, and the dates are sweet. It is perfect on a cold evening.

  50. Sara

That sounds lovely. Who makes the coffee?

  51. Fahad

Usually the oldest person. My grandfather did it for many years, and now my father does it.

  52. James

In Britain, we cook sausages on a stick and make toast over the fire. It is not as fancy!

  53. Sara

I like toasted marshmallows. In America, we put them on a stick and make sweet sandwiches.

  54. Fahad

We do not have marshmallows, but we roast sweet potatoes in the hot sand. They are delicious.

  55. James

Oh, that is clever. The sand cooks the food?

  56. Fahad

Yes, after the fire is gone, the sand stays hot for a long time.

  57. Sara

I would try that. But I would also bring a lot of snacks, just in case.

  58. James

Fahad, what do you do after dinner? Is there a lot to do at night?

  59. Fahad

We sit by the fire, talk and tell stories. The older people tell stories about the old days.

  60. Sara

    What kind of stories?

  61. Fahad

Stories about travelling with camels, and how people found their way by the stars.

  62. Sara

Do you have a favourite story?

  63. Fahad

Yes. My grandfather once lost his way at night. He found the camp again by looking at one bright star.

  64. James

That is amazing. People really used the stars as a map?

  65. Fahad

Yes, for hundreds of years. Travellers looked at the sky to know the direction.

  66. Sara

And how are the stars in the desert?

  67. Fahad

Unbelievable. There are no city lights, so you can see thousands of stars.

  68. Sara

Wow, I can almost see it.

  69. Fahad

Sometimes I lie on my back for an hour and just look up.

  70. James

I saw the stars like that once, in Scotland. I felt very small, in a good way.

  71. Sara

I have never seen so many stars. In my city, I can see maybe ten.

  72. Fahad

Then you must come. Some people also see a shooting star, and they make a wish.

  73. James

    Did you ever see one?

  74. Fahad

Many times. Last winter, my little cousin saw three in one night. He was so happy!

  75. Sara

Okay, that does sound magical. I have to admit it.

  76. Fahad

And the silence is special too. You can hear the fire and nothing else.

  77. Sara

Time for our Language corner! Today we have three useful words.

  78. James

The first one is campfire. A campfire is a small fire that people make outside to keep warm.

  79. Sara

The second word is uncomfortable. If something is uncomfortable, you do not feel good or relaxed.

  80. Fahad

That is a very useful word for camping.

  81. Sara

For example, a hard bed is uncomfortable.

  82. James

And the third is shooting star. It is a bright light that moves quickly across the night sky.

  83. Fahad

In Arabic, we say nayzak or shihab. Many children love to look for them.

  84. Sara

Great! Listeners, say one sentence with the word uncomfortable. Tell us about a time you felt that way.

  85. James

Now the big question. Is a night in the desert fun, or is it uncomfortable?

  86. Sara

I still have some worries. Sleeping on the ground sounds hard, and sand gets everywhere.

  87. Fahad

That is true. Sand in your shoes, in your hair, even in your food sometimes!

  88. James

But that is part of the adventure. A little sand never hurt anyone.

  89. Sara

I disagree, James. I like my own bed, a hot shower and a quiet room.

  90. Fahad

I understand, Sara. For some people, comfort is more important than adventure.

  91. James

    That is a fair point.

  92. Fahad

But today there are many nice camps with soft beds and clean toilets. You can try a comfortable one first.

  93. Sara

Hmm, that is a good idea. A middle way.

  94. Fahad

Also, you may see small foxes far from the camp. They are shy and run away.

  95. Sara

Foxes? Now I'm a little nervous again!

  96. James

I think the cold is the biggest problem. Did you ever have a really cold night, Fahad?

  97. Fahad

Yes! One night, I forgot my thick blanket. I slept in my jacket, my hat and two pairs of socks.

  98. Sara

    Ha! Did it work?

  99. Fahad

Not really. In the morning, my cousins laughed at me, because I looked like a big ball.

  100. James

I would have been the same. But the morning must be beautiful.

  101. Fahad

It is my favourite time. The sun comes up slowly, the sand turns gold, and the air is fresh.

  102. Sara

That sounds beautiful. Maybe I could try it for just one night.

  103. James

Wonderful! Just remember a thick blanket.

  104. Fahad

And bring a friend who can make good coffee!

  105. Sara

Let's finish with the main ideas. Fahad taught us a lot today.

  106. James

We learned that desert nights are cold in winter, so you need warm clothes.

  107. Fahad

And we talked about food around the fire, the stars and the stories from the old days.

  108. Sara

My final opinion is that I'm still a little afraid, but I really want to see those stars.

  109. James

I think it is the best way to relax. A night in the desert is something you never forget.

  110. Fahad

For me, it is fun, but you must prepare well. Take warm clothes, go with friends, and enjoy the quiet.

  111. Sara

Now a question for you, our listeners. Would you sleep a night in the desert? Why, or why not?

  112. James

Think about your answer and say it in English. Thank you for listening, and thank you, Fahad.

  113. Fahad

It was my pleasure. Goodbye everyone, and enjoy the stars!

  114. Sara

Goodbye, and see you next time on Easy Learn Podcast!
