  1. Sara

Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara.

  2. James

And I'm James. Today we are going to talk about shopping. Do you buy things online, or do you prefer shops?

  3. Sara

Our guest knows a lot about this topic. Please welcome Majed!

  4. Majed

Hi Sara, hi James. Thanks for having me. I'm happy to be here.

  5. James

Majed, please tell our listeners a little about yourself.

  6. Majed

Sure. I'm from Jeddah, and I have a small clothes shop there. Last year, I also started to sell online.

  7. Sara

So you really know both worlds, the shop and the internet!

  8. Majed

Yes, I do. Every day I see happy customers, and sometimes I see angry ones too.

  9. James

Ha ha! We will hear some stories today. Let's start with online shopping.

  10. Sara

My first question is for everyone. What was the last thing you bought online?

  11. James

I bought a pair of running shoes last week.

  12. Majed

Nice! Was it a good price?

  13. James

Yes! I found a good price on a website, so I ordered them in five minutes.

  14. Sara

Five minutes! That is fast. I bought a book and some headphones.

  15. James

When do you usually shop online?

  16. Sara

Late at night, when I'm in bed!

  17. Majed

I bought a phone case and some coffee beans. I love that I can compare prices on my phone.

  18. Sara

And it is often cheaper than a shop, because online stores don't pay for a big building.

  19. Majed

That's true, but not always. Sometimes a mall has a big sale, and the price is lower than online.

  20. Sara

Good point, Majed. What else do you like about shopping online?

  21. James

For me, it is easy. I don't need to drive, and I don't need to find a parking space.

  22. Majed

In Jeddah, parking at the mall on a Friday evening is terrible! It can take thirty minutes.

  23. James

But there is one problem for me. When I buy clothes online, I can't try them on.

  24. Majed

Yes, that is a big problem.

  25. Sara

    Does it happen a lot?

  26. Majed

Yes! Many customers ordered a shirt from my website and then sent it back because it was too small.

  27. Sara

That happened to me with a dress.

  28. Majed

    Oh no. What happened?

  29. Sara

In the photo, it looked beautiful, but when it arrived, it was too long and the colour was different.

  30. James

    What did you do, Sara?

  31. Sara

I sent it back, but it took two weeks to get my money back. I was not happy.

  32. Majed

This is why I write the size clearly on my website.

  33. James

    What else do you do?

  34. Majed

I put real photos, not only pictures from the factory.

  35. James

That's a smart idea. Honest photos help the customer, and they help your business too.

  36. Sara

Now let's talk about shopping in malls and shops. James, do you like it?

  37. James

Yes, I do, but only when I have a lot of time.

  38. Sara

    Why only then?

  39. James

I like to touch things and see them with my own eyes.

  40. Sara

Me too, especially for clothes and shoes. I like to try them on and look in the mirror.

  41. Majed

In my shop, I see this every day.

  42. Sara

    What do you see?

  43. Majed

A customer comes in, touches the cloth, and says, oh, this is soft! Then he buys it.

  44. James

That's the power of a real shop. You can feel the quality.

  45. Majed

Also, people in my country love going to the mall with family and friends.

  46. James

Is the mall only for buying things?

  47. Majed

No! It's a place to walk, eat, and talk, not only to buy things.

  48. James

In Britain, many shops in the town centre are closing.

  49. Majed

    Really? Why?

  50. James

More people are shopping online, so some old shops can't stay open.

  51. Majed

This worries me a little. I want to keep my shop, so I make it a special place.

  52. Sara

    How do you do that?

  53. Majed

I serve Arabic coffee, and I talk to every customer.

  54. James

Do you ever go to a shop to see a product, and then buy it online?

  55. Majed

Ha ha, yes! Many people do that.

  56. James

    Really?

  57. Majed

They come to my shop, try the shoes, take a photo, and go home to find a cheaper price.

  58. Sara

Guilty! I did that last month with a jacket.

  59. Majed

Don't feel bad! It's normal. But I tell my customers, if you like my service, please buy from me.

  60. Sara

Let's talk about delivery. Has anyone had a bad delivery story?

  61. James

Yes! I ordered a chair for my living room.

  62. Majed

    Oh, what happened?

  63. James

The delivery man said he would come on Tuesday, so I stayed at home all day.

  64. Sara

    Oh no. Did he come?

  65. James

No! He called at six in the evening and said the truck had a problem.

  66. Sara

    Oh dear.

  67. James

He said he was going to come on Thursday.

  68. Majed

That's so annoying. Did he come on Thursday?

  69. James

He came on Saturday, and the box was broken. One leg of the chair was missing.

  70. Sara

That is terrible! What did you do?

  71. James

I took photos and wrote to the company.

  72. Sara

    Good idea.

  73. James

In the end, they sent a new chair, but it took a month.

  74. Majed

I have a delivery story too.

  75. Sara

    Tell us!

  76. Majed

I sold a thobe to a customer in another city, and the courier took it to the wrong house.

  77. Sara

    The wrong house? How?

  78. Majed

The address on the map was a little wrong. The package went to a neighbour.

  79. James

    Oh dear!

  80. Majed

Luckily, the neighbour was kind and called me.

  81. James

That was lucky! Do you have a lot of problems like this in your business?

  82. Majed

Not a lot, but enough. Late deliveries are the biggest problem. Customers get angry, and they write bad reviews.

  83. Sara

A bad review can really hurt a small business, right?

  84. Majed

Yes, it can. So now I check every order twice, and I tell the customer the real date, not a perfect date.

  85. Sara

My worst delivery story was a birthday gift.

  86. Majed

    A birthday gift? Tell us.

  87. Sara

I ordered a present for my mum, and it arrived a week after her birthday.

  88. Majed

Oh no. What did you say to your mum?

  89. Sara

I made a card and wrote, your gift is on its way!

  90. James

    Ha ha, clever!

  91. Sara

She laughed, and in the end she loved it.

  92. James

Now it's time for the big question. Which is better, shopping online or in shops?

  93. Majed

For me, it depends on what I'm buying.

  94. Sara

    Like what?

  95. Majed

For clothes, I prefer shops. For simple things like batteries or cables, online is better.

  96. Sara

I agree with you. For small, simple things I use the internet.

  97. James

    And for big things?

  98. Sara

For something big, like a sofa or a laptop, I go to a shop first.

  99. James

I disagree a little. I think online shopping is better for almost everything, because it saves time and money.

  100. Sara

    Really, James? Even for clothes?

  101. James

Well, if the website has an easy return, yes. I order two sizes and send one back.

  102. Majed

That is a good trick, but it's not good for the environment, with all the boxes and trucks.

  103. Sara

What about safety? I worry a little about paying online.

  104. Majed

Me too, sometimes. I only buy from websites I know.

  105. Sara

    Anything else?

  106. Majed

I choose to pay when the package arrives, if it's possible.

  107. James

I check the reviews first. If a website has only five reviews, I don't buy from it.

  108. Sara

Good advice. Also, if the price is too good to be true, it is probably not true.

  109. Majed

Exactly! My father used to say, cheap things become expensive in the end.

  110. James

Wise words. So, in the future, will people stop going to shops?

  111. Majed

I don't think so. I believe shops will change, but they will not disappear. People like to meet people.

  112. Sara

I agree. Maybe shops will become places to try and enjoy, and the buying will happen on your phone.

  113. James

That sounds possible. Perhaps we are going to see more small shops with fast delivery.

  114. Sara

It's time for our Language Corner. Today I want to explain three useful expressions from our talk.

  115. James

The first one is try on. When you try on clothes, you wear them in the shop to see if they fit.

  116. Majed

Yes, I say that to my customers all day. Please try it on, the mirror is over there.

  117. Sara

The second expression is send back. When you send something back, you return it to the shop because there is a problem.

  118. Majed

And the third one is review. A review is when a customer writes what they think about a product or a shop.

  119. Sara

Good reviews are great for business, and bad reviews are terrible. Let's practise! Majed, tell us about something you sent back.

  120. Majed

I sent back a jacket because the sleeves were too long. Then I wrote a review and said the shop was friendly.

  121. Sara

Now let's finish with a short summary. Today we talked about shopping online and in shops.

  122. James

Online shopping is easy and often cheaper, but you can't try things on.

  123. Sara

    And shops?

  124. James

Shops are great for touching things and for personal service, but parking can be difficult.

  125. Majed

We also talked about delivery problems. Late and broken packages are a real headache for customers and for small businesses.

  126. Sara

Now our final opinions. Majed, what is your answer to the big question?

  127. Majed

I think both are important. A smart shopper uses the internet to compare, and a good shop to try and enjoy.

  128. James

Mine is a little different. I'm going to keep shopping online, but I want to visit more local shops to help them.

  129. Sara

I will do the same. I will shop online for easy things and in shops for special things.

  130. James

Now a question for you, listeners. Do you like shopping online or in shops? Tell us why.

  131. Sara

And tell us your worst delivery story. We love funny stories!

  132. Majed

Thank you for inviting me. It was a pleasure.

  133. James

    Thanks, Majed! Goodbye everyone.

  134. Sara

    Goodbye, and happy shopping!
