Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara.
- James
And I'm James. Today we are talking about jobs, and especially the jobs we wanted as children.
- Sara
When you were small, what did you want to be? A doctor? A pilot? A football player?
- James
I wanted to be a train driver. I will tell you why later.
- Sara
Today we have a guest who also has a great story. Please welcome Omar!
- Omar
Hello Sara, hello James! Thanks for having me. I'm very happy to be here.
- James
Omar, please tell our listeners a little about yourself.
- Omar
Sure. I'm from Amman in Jordan, but I live in Dubai now. I have a small online coffee business.
- Sara
Coffee! Perfect for a long chat. So today we will talk about our childhood dream jobs and our real jobs now.
- James
We will also talk about what makes a good job. At the end, we will give some advice to young people.
- Omar
That sounds great. I have a lot of opinions!
- Sara
Let's start with the past. Omar, what did you want to be when you were ten?
- Omar
I wanted to be a pilot. I loved planes, and I wanted to see the whole world.
- James
Why a pilot? Did someone in your family fly planes?
- Omar
No, but my uncle worked at the airport in Amman. He took me there once.
- James
What happened there?
- Omar
I saw the big planes up close, and I never forgot it.
- Sara
That's a great memory. What did you love about the planes?
- Omar
They were so big, but they flew in the sky! I thought it was magic.
- James
Did you like the pilot's uniform too?
- Omar
Of course! I wanted a uniform with gold stripes.
- Sara
Did you get one?
- Omar
No, but I wore a white shirt to school and told everyone I was a pilot.
- Sara
That's so funny! James, what about you?
- James
I wanted to be a train driver. Every Saturday, my grandfather took me to the station.
- Omar
That's lovely. Why did you want to drive a train?
- James
I thought it was the best job in the world. You sit at the front, and everyone waits for you.
- Sara
Well, I wanted to be a vet. I loved animals, and I had a small cat called Mimi.
- Omar
A vet is a very kind job. What happened?
- Sara
When I was twelve, I helped at a vet's clinic. A dog was sick, and I felt so sad.
- James
Oh no. Did you cry?
- Sara
Yes, I cried for an hour! I decided it was too hard for me.
- James
But you still love animals?
- Sara
Yes! Now I have a dog called Max.
- Omar
I think many children want the same jobs. Pilot, doctor, teacher, or football player.
- James
Yes! In my class, half of the boys wanted to be footballers. Nobody became one.
- Omar
Me too! I played every day after school. But I was never good enough.
- Sara
Why do you think children choose these jobs?
- James
I think they choose jobs they can see. They see pilots, doctors, and teachers every day.
- Omar
Good point.
- James
They don't see an accountant at work.
- Omar
Yes. When I was a child, nobody told me about jobs like web designer or data analyst.
- Sara
Right. Many of today's jobs didn't exist when we were small. For example, a social media manager.
- James
So Omar, you wanted to be a pilot. How did you start your coffee business?
- Omar
It's a long story! At university I studied engineering because my parents wanted me to. Then I worked in an office.
- Sara
Were you happy there?
- Omar
Not really. The work was boring, and I sat at a desk all day.
- James
So what changed?
- Omar
Every morning I drank very good coffee, and I became interested in it.
- James
So coffee changed your life!
- Omar
A little, yes! I sold coffee beans to my friends. They loved them, so I made a website.
- Sara
That's amazing. How is it now?
- Omar
It's busy, but I'm much happier. I work hard, but I decide my day.
- James
And do you travel for your job?
- Omar
Yes! I visit coffee farms in Ethiopia and Colombia.
- Sara
So you see the world!
- Omar
A little, like a pilot. But I sit in the passenger seat.
- Sara
I love that. Do you ever want to be a pilot now?
- Omar
Sometimes, when I'm tired. But then I remember the long hours, and I think my job is better for me.
- James
I never became a train driver either. I was an English teacher in London for eight years.
- Omar
Did you enjoy teaching?
- James
I did. I liked helping students. But I also love talking and telling jokes, so this job is perfect for me.
- Sara
And I worked at a radio station. I made tea, answered phones, and learned how to speak on the radio.
- Omar
And now you are both hosts. Did you plan this?
- James
Not at all! It just happened. A friend asked me to try, and I loved it.
- Sara
I think a childhood dream is not always your real job. But it can show you what you like.
- Omar
That's a good point. My dream was to see the world, and now coffee takes me around the world.
- James
I loved trains because they take people to new places. Now I help people learn English. It's similar!
- Sara
And I loved animals because I like helping. Now I help our listeners. Maybe they are my animals!
- Omar
Ha! That is the best answer I heard today.
- Sara
Let's talk about a bigger question. What makes a good job? James, what do you think?
- James
For me, it's the people. A job with kind colleagues is better than a job with a big salary.
- Omar
I agree a little, but money is important too. You need a salary to live and to help your family.
- Sara
That's true. But is a high salary enough?
- Omar
No, it isn't. My first job paid well, but I was sad every Sunday night.
- James
Ah, the Sunday night feeling. I know it well.
- Sara
For me, a good job needs three things. You learn new things, you help other people, and you feel proud.
- Omar
Interesting. I want to add one more thing, and it is freedom. I like choosing my own hours.
- James
I disagree a bit. Freedom is nice, but some people like a fixed schedule.
- Sara
What do you mean?
- James
They work from nine to five, and then they relax.
- Omar
That's a good point, James. Some people feel stressed when they don't have a clear plan.
- Sara
So a good job is different for everyone.
- James
Exactly. A job that is perfect for Omar can be terrible for me.
- Omar
Yes. And a job can change. In my first year with coffee, I worked fourteen hours a day.
- Sara
And now?
- Omar
Now I want more time with my family.
- Sara
What about working from home? Is it better than the office?
- James
I like working from home because I save time. No traffic! But sometimes I miss my colleagues.
- Omar
In Dubai the traffic is terrible, so I love home. But I go to a cafe two days a week.
- Sara
Me too. I think a mix is best.
- James
One more question. Do you think customers make a job better or worse?
- Omar
Both! Happy customers are the best part of my day.
- James
And angry customers?
- Omar
They can ruin a morning!
- Sara
How do you deal with angry customers?
- Omar
I listen first, and I say sorry. Then I try to fix the problem fast. Most people become kind again.
- James
That's good advice for any job.
- Sara
Now it's time for our Language corner. Let's look at three useful words and expressions from today.
- James
The first one is salary. A salary is the money you get from your job every month.
- Omar
And remember, in many places it's not polite to ask someone, what is your salary? It's a private question.
- Sara
Good tip. The second word is colleague. A colleague is a person who works with you.
- James
A colleague can become a friend, but not always. For example, some of my colleagues are my best friends.
- Omar
What is the third one?
- Sara
The third one is change your mind. It means you decide something new. I changed my mind about being a vet.
الثالثة هي change your mind.
- James
We use it in the past, I changed my mind, and in the future, I might change my mind.
- Omar
Let me try. I wanted to be a pilot, but I changed my mind.
- Sara
Perfect, Omar!
- James
Now let's give some advice. Omar, you have a lot of experience. What do you tell a young person?
- Omar
First, try many things. Don't decide at fifteen what you will do for the rest of your life.
- Sara
I agree. Many people in my family changed their jobs after thirty, and they are happy.
- James
My advice is to learn skills, not only a job title.
- Omar
What skills?
- James
Speaking clearly, working in a team, and using computers help in any job.
- Omar
Yes! And learn English. It opens many doors. In Dubai, almost every company uses English.
- Sara
Of course, we agree with that! Also, talk to adults about their jobs.
- Omar
How?
- Sara
Ask your uncle, your neighbor, or your teacher what they do every day.
- James
Good idea. If you ask ten people, you will learn about ten different jobs.
- Omar
And don't be afraid to fail. My first website was ugly, and nobody bought my coffee for two weeks.
- Sara
Two weeks without customers! What did you do?
- Omar
I changed the design, asked my friends for help, and kept going. Little by little, it became better.
- James
That's a great lesson. What about parents? Should they choose a job for their children?
- Omar
Parents want the best, but I think children should choose. Parents can give advice and listen.
- Sara
I agree. My parents told me to choose a job I love, but also a job that can pay my bills.
- James
And remember, a dream job can change many times. That's not a failure. It's just life.
- Omar
I think we talked about a lot today. We talked about pilots, trains, vets, and coffee.
- Sara
We learned that childhood dreams often change, but they can still show us what we love.
- James
My final opinion is that the best job is the one with good people and a little freedom.
- Omar
Mine is that you should try many things, learn skills, and never be afraid to change your mind.
- Sara
Mine is that a good job makes you feel proud. Money matters, but it isn't everything.
- James
Now a question for you, listeners. What did you want to be when you were a child?
- Sara
And what do you want to be now? Tell a friend or your family. You may be surprised by the answer.
- Omar
Thank you, Sara and James. This was a lot of fun, and I feel like a pilot again.
- James
Thank you, Omar. And thanks to all of you for listening.
- Sara
