Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara.
- James
And I'm James. Today we talk about something exciting and a little scary.
- Sara
Learning to drive! James, do you remember your first time behind the wheel?
- James
Of course. I was seventeen, and my hands were shaking. I will never forget it.
- Sara
We have a special guest to talk about this. Please welcome Dana!
- Dana
Hello Sara, hello James! Thank you for inviting me. I'm a university student from Jeddah.
- James
Dana passed her driving test last year, so her memories are fresh.
- Dana
Yes! My story is a little funny, because I was very nervous at the start.
- Sara
Let's start at the beginning, Dana. Where was your first lesson?
- Dana
In an empty car park near my house. My father sat next to me.
- James
Good plan. An empty car park is safer than a busy road.
- Dana
Yes, but I still made a big mistake. I pushed the wrong pedal!
- Sara
Oh no! Did you hit anything?
- Dana
No, thank goodness. The car stopped just before a small tree.
- James
Phew! That was close.
- Dana
My father laughed, but I was shaking for ten minutes.
- James
My first lesson was worse. I forgot to take the handbrake off.
- Sara
Really? What did your teacher say?
- James
He was very calm. He said, James, the car is not happy. Please be kind to it.
- Dana
A calm teacher is so important. Mine was patient too, and that helped me a lot.
- Sara
I learned in the United States when I was sixteen. My mother was my teacher.
- James
Ha! Was she calm like my teacher?
- Sara
Not at all! She shouted every time I turned a corner, and I cried once.
- Dana
I think family lessons are good for practice, but you also need a real teacher.
- James
Why is that, Dana?
- Dana
A professional knows the rules very well.
- James
I agree. A family member can be too nervous, or too relaxed.
- Sara
That's a good point, but I think both together are best.
- Dana
I did both. Every weekend, my brother and I drove on the quiet streets near home.
- James
What was the hardest thing for you? Parking, turning, or driving fast?
- Dana
Parking! I needed ten minutes for a small space, and other drivers waited behind me.
- Sara
I hate parking too! In big cities, the spaces are so small.
- James
Now the big moment, the driving test. Dana, how did you feel that day?
- Dana
I couldn't sleep the night before. In the morning, I was too nervous to eat breakfast.
- Sara
That's so normal! What did the examiner ask you to do?
- Dana
First I checked the mirrors and put on my seat belt. Then I drove on a quiet road.
- Sara
And then the parking?
- Dana
At the end, I did a parking test.
- James
And did you pass the first time?
- Dana
Yes! But my friend failed three times. She said the examiner was too strict.
- Sara
Poor girl! I failed my first test too. I forgot to look over my shoulder.
- James
I failed my first test as well. I drove through a red light.
- Dana
Really, James? That is a very serious mistake!
- James
I know. I was thinking about lunch. The examiner said, Please stop the car.
- Sara
So what is your advice for people who are nervous before a test?
- Dana
Take a deep breath and sleep well. Drive with a teacher you know, and you will feel safer.
- James
I say practise in the same area as the test. You will know the roads, so you will worry less.
- Sara
And remember, failing is not the end of the world. Many good drivers failed once.
- Dana
That's true. After I passed, my family went out for dinner. It was a proud day.
- James
Congratulations again! Was it exciting to drive alone for the first time?
- Dana
Very exciting! I drove to my grandmother's house and turned the radio up loud.
- James
How did it feel?
- Dana
I felt free.
- Sara
I love that feeling. The car is like a small room that can go anywhere.
- James
Let's talk about rules. Every country has different driving rules, and some are surprising.
- Sara
Yes! In Britain, you drive on the left side of the road, right James?
- James
Right. And the steering wheel is on the right side of the car.
- Sara
That sounds difficult!
- James
British tourists often feel confused in other countries.
- Dana
In Saudi Arabia, we drive on the right, like in the United States. I tried driving in London once. It was so strange!
- Sara
What happened?
- Dana
I turned the wrong way at a small crossing. A bus driver waved at me, and I wanted to disappear.
- James
That happens a lot! Most visitors need a few days to feel normal.
- Sara
Another difference is age. In many parts of the United States, you can drive at sixteen.
- James
In Britain, you wait until you are seventeen. In Saudi Arabia, you need to be eighteen.
- Dana
I think eighteen is a good age. Young drivers need time to become responsible.
- Sara
Hmm, I don't completely agree. Good training is more important than age.
- James
Fair point, Sara. A careful sixteen-year-old can be better than a careless thirty-year-old.
- Dana
True! Another difference is the gears. In Europe, many people prefer manual cars.
- Sara
Yes, that is very true.
- Dana
But in America, most cars are automatic.
- Sara
I have never driven a manual car. I tried once in Spain, and the car stopped ten times in one street.
- James
Ha! I learned on a manual car, so I think it's more fun. You feel close to the engine.
- Dana
I disagree, James. An automatic car is easier and safer, especially in the heavy traffic of Jeddah.
- Sara
Traffic is a good topic. What is the worst traffic you have ever seen?
- James
Once I sat in a traffic jam for three hours. I read a whole newspaper in the car!
- Dana
In my city, traffic is heavy on Thursday evenings, because everybody goes out.
- Sara
Oh, that is a smart idea!
- Dana
But I use the time to listen to my favourite songs.
- Sara
Now it's time for our Language corner. We have three useful words from today.
- James
The first one is examiner. An examiner checks your driving in the test and decides if you pass.
- Sara
The second is nervous. If you are nervous, you feel worried and a little afraid.
- James
That is a perfect example.
- Sara
For example, I was nervous before my first lesson.
- James
And the third is traffic jam. It is a long line of cars that cannot move.
- Dana
Yes, we all know this one very well!
- James
We say, I was stuck in a traffic jam this morning.
- Dana
In Arabic, we say zahma for traffic jam, and we use it every day!
- Sara
Wonderful. Listeners, make your own sentence with one of these words and say it out loud.
- James
Let's finish with the future. How will cars change in the next twenty years?
- Dana
I think most cars will be electric. They are quiet, and they are better for the air in our cities.
- Sara
I agree. I also think many cars will drive by themselves. You will sit in the car and read a book.
- James
Hmm, I'm not sure. Would you really trust a car without a driver?
- Sara
Maybe not at first. But some studies suggest computers make fewer mistakes than tired people.
- Dana
That's a good point. I would try it, but I would stay careful. I like to be in control.
- James
If cars drive themselves, will people still need driving lessons?
- Dana
I think yes, for many years. A computer can make a mistake, and a person must be ready to help.
- Sara
What about flying cars? I saw a video last month, and it looked like a big toy.
- James
I love the idea, but the roads in the sky will be even busier than the roads on the ground!
- Dana
Ha ha, you are right. Imagine a traffic jam above your head. I would stay on the ground.
- Sara
We are almost at the end of the show. Let's go through the main ideas.
- James
We heard about our first lessons, and some were very funny. We also talked about how to stay calm in the test.
- Dana
And each country has different rules. Driving on the left or the right can change your whole experience.
- Sara
Dana, what is your final opinion about learning to drive?
- Dana
It is difficult at first, but it gives you a lot of confidence. Be patient with yourself.
- James
My final opinion is simple. Drive carefully, never use your phone, and enjoy the journey.
- Sara
And mine is, don't be afraid to make mistakes in your lessons. That's how we all learn.
- James
Now a question for you, our listeners. What was your funniest or scariest moment in a car?
- Sara
Tell a friend in English! Thank you for listening, and thank you, Dana, for joining us.
- Dana
Thank you both, it was a pleasure. Goodbye everyone, and drive safely!
- James
Goodbye, and see you next time on Easy Learn Podcast!
