Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara.
- James
And I'm James. Today we are talking about holidays. What was your best holiday ever?
- Sara
We all love holidays, right? And we all love telling holiday stories.
- James
And we have a special guest. Please welcome Lina. She is a university student from Jeddah.
- Lina
Hi Sara, hi James! Thank you for inviting me. I love talking about travel.
- Sara
Great! Lina, do you travel a lot?
- Lina
Not a lot, but I visited a few countries with my family. My best holiday was two years ago.
- James
Excellent. Here is the plan. Each of us will tell one holiday story.
- Sara
We will say where we went, who we went with, and what we loved.
- James
And we will say what went wrong, because every good story has a small problem. Lina, would you like to start?
- Lina
Of course! I'm happy to start.
- Sara
So Lina, where did you go?
- Lina
We went to Turkey, to a city called Trabzon.
- Sara
Lovely. And who did you go with?
- Lina
My mother, my father, and my two little brothers.
- James
Trabzon! I don't know that place. Is it a big city like Istanbul?
- Lina
No, it's smaller. It's in the north, near the Black Sea.
- Sara
Is it beautiful there?
- Lina
Very! There are green mountains everywhere, and it rains a lot.
- Sara
That sounds very different from Jeddah! Why did you choose it?
- Lina
Because my father wanted something cool and green. In July, Jeddah is very hot.
- James
That makes sense. So Lina, what went wrong? Every holiday has a problem.
- Lina
Oh, many things! First, our plane was delayed for five hours, so we arrived at two o'clock in the morning.
- Sara
Oh no! You were probably so tired. What did you do at the airport?
- Lina
My brothers fell asleep on the floor, and my mother was angry.
- Sara
And the hotel?
- Lina
They lost our booking. They had no room for us!
- James
That's terrible. What did you do at two in the morning?
- Lina
The hotel manager called his cousin, who had a small family hotel.
- Sara
That was lucky!
- Lina
Yes! We took a taxi there, but the driver took the wrong road twice.
- Sara
Wow, that's a very long night! Did you laugh about it later?
- Lina
Yes, but not that night! The next morning, I opened the window and saw a big green mountain. Suddenly I forgot everything.
- James
That's lovely. So what did you love most?
- Lina
The views, the food, and the people.
- James
What did you do there?
- Lina
We went on a boat trip on a small lake, and we drank hot tea in the mountains every afternoon.
- Sara
I love that. Was it easy to talk to people?
- Lina
Not really. We only knew a few Turkish words. But everyone was so friendly.
- Sara
Really? How?
- Lina
A woman in a shop gave my brother a free cake because he said thank you in Turkish.
- James
That is brilliant. Small words can make a big difference.
- Lina
Exactly! And one more thing happened. On the third day, my youngest brother got lost in a market.
- Sara
Oh no! What happened?
- Lina
We looked for him for twenty minutes. My father was very worried.
- James
And then?
- Lina
We found him at an ice cream shop, talking to the seller with his hands!
- James
Ha! A small hero of travel. He found the best shop in town.
- Lina
Yes, and now my family tells that story every Eid. It's the best part of the holiday now.
- Sara
That's the magic of travel. The problems become the stories we love.
- Lina
James, now it's your turn. Where did you go?
- James
Well, my story is a bit crazy. At twenty, I went camping in Scotland with my friends Tom and Ben.
- Sara
Camping! I can't see you in a tent, James.
- James
Neither could I after that week! We wanted a cheap holiday, so we took a train north.
- Lina
That sounds exciting. What was the weather like?
- James
It rained for six days. Six! Everything was wet, our shoes, our bags, even our sandwiches.
- Sara
Oh dear. Did you bring good clothes for the rain?
- James
That was our first mistake. I only brought a thin jacket, and Tom forgot his coat completely.
- Lina
So what happened with the tent?
- James
On the third night, a strong wind broke it. The tent fell on our heads at midnight.
- Sara
That's awful! Where did you sleep?
- James
We walked in the dark for an hour and found a small farm. The farmer, Mr. Campbell, opened the door.
- Lina
Was he angry?
- James
Not at all! He laughed, gave us hot soup, and let us sleep in his warm barn with the sheep.
- Sara
That's so kind. Did the sheep bother you?
- James
One sheep tried to eat Ben's hat! We laughed for ten minutes.
- Sara
That's funny. And in the morning?
- James
Mr. Campbell's wife made us a big breakfast.
- Lina
What did you love most about the trip?
- James
The quiet. In the mountains you only hear the wind and the birds.
- Lina
Did the sun come out?
- James
On day seven! And the views were amazing.
- Sara
So the weather was terrible, but it was still your best holiday?
- James
Yes, because of my friends and the kind people. Nobody remembers the rain now. They remember the sheep.
- Lina
I think that's true. Good people make a good holiday.
- James
Sara, you're next. Please don't tell me your holiday was perfect!
- Sara
Ha, no! My best holiday was a road trip in California. I went with my older sister, Emily.
- Lina
A road trip! I always want to try that. Where did you drive?
- Sara
We started in San Francisco and drove south along the coast to Los Angeles. It took eight days.
- James
Eight days is a good plan. Did you plan every stop?
- Sara
I planned everything. I had a long list of hotels, restaurants, and beaches.
- Lina
And your sister?
- Sara
She just wanted to drive and listen to music.
- James
So you were the boss and she was the driver.
- Sara
Yes! And on day three, our car broke down in a tiny town with one road and one shop.
- Lina
Oh no. What did you do?
- Sara
We called a mechanic. He said he needed a special part, and it would arrive in two days.
- Lina
Were you upset?
- Sara
Very! My plan was broken.
- James
Two days in a tiny town. That's every planner's nightmare.
- Sara
It really was! But then the mechanic's family invited us to dinner.
- James
How nice!
- Sara
His wife cooked tacos, and his children showed us the beach near their house.
- Lina
That's so sweet. Was the beach nice?
- Sara
It was empty and beautiful. At sunset the sky turned orange and pink.
- James
Wow.
- Sara
And we saw whales far away in the water. I never saw them before that day.
- James
Whales! That is something you can't plan.
- Sara
Exactly. My sister said that sometimes a broken car is the best thing. I hate it when she is right.
- Lina
I love this. So the best moments were unplanned.
- Sara
Yes. Before this trip, I wanted everything perfect. After it, I learned to relax a little.
- James
Interesting! But I want to disagree a little. I think a small plan is still important.
- Sara
Really? Why?
- James
In Scotland we never checked the weather, and that was silly. A little planning would help.
- Lina
I agree with James a bit. My father booked our hotel online, but he didn't call to check it.
- Sara
Good point. So maybe the best way is to plan the big things and leave space for surprises.
- Lina
Yes! Plan the hotel and the tickets. But don't plan every minute.
- James
I like that. Book the bed, but let the day surprise you.
- Sara
Here's another question. Do you prefer holidays with family or with friends?
- Lina
For me, family. My brothers drive me crazy, but they make every trip funny.
- James
I prefer friends, honestly. We can stay up late and do silly things. But family holidays are great for food.
- Sara
I like both. My trip with my sister showed me that family can be your best friends too.
- Lina
Nice. And what about the food? For me, food is half of a holiday.
- James
Totally. I remember Mr. Campbell's soup more than any restaurant meal.
- Sara
And I remember the tacos. Lina, which Turkish food did you love?
- Lina
Fresh fish by the sea, and a warm kunafa with cheese. It was special!
- Sara
Now it's time for our Language corner. Today we have three useful expressions from our stories.
- James
The first one is delayed. Lina said her plane was delayed for five hours. It means the plane was late.
- Sara
Yes. You can say a train or a bus is delayed. My flight was delayed because of the weather.
- Lina
Can I use it for people too? Like, I was delayed at school?
- James
Good question. For people we usually say I was late. Delayed is more common for planes, trains, and buses.
- Sara
The second expression is go wrong. When something goes wrong, there is a problem.
- James
In the past, we say went wrong. For example, the hotel lost the booking, and everything went wrong that night.
- Lina
The third one is broke down. We use it for cars, but also for machines.
الثالث هو broke down.
- Sara
Right. My car broke down in a tiny town. Last week my washing machine broke down, too.
- James
Remember, break is an irregular verb. Break, broke, broken. When a car breaks down, you call a mechanic.
- Lina
Thank you! Let me try. Last year our air conditioner broke down in July, and everything went wrong.
- Sara
Perfect sentence, Lina! You used two expressions together.
- James
We're almost at the end. Lina told us about a long night in Turkey and a lost little brother.
- Sara
James told us about rain, a broken tent, and a hungry sheep. I told you about a broken car and whales.
- Lina
And the lesson is that problems make the best stories. Also, kind people make a holiday special.
- James
My final opinion is this. Make a small plan, take a good coat, and always say thank you in the local language.
- Sara
Mine is to leave some time for surprises. You never know when you will see a whale.
- Lina
Mine is to travel with people you love, and try new food. I can't wait for my next holiday.
- Sara
Now a question for you, listeners. What was your best holiday ever, and what went wrong? Tell a friend in English!
- James
Thank you, Lina, for sharing your story with us.
- Lina
Thank you both! It was so much fun.
- Sara
Thanks for listening to Easy Learn Podcast. See you next time!
- James
Goodbye, everyone, and have a wonderful holiday!
