Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara, and today we're talking about where we choose to live.
- James
And I'm James. Some people love the lights and the energy of a big city. Others dream of a quiet life in a small town.
- Sara
So which one is better? People argue about it all over the world, from Riyadh to Chicago.
- James
To talk about it, we have a guest who knows both worlds. Welcome, Salma! She grew up in a small town near Abha, and now she works in Riyadh.
- Salma
Thank you, James and Sara. I'm happy to be here. I often feel like I have one foot in the mountains and one foot in the city.
- James
One foot in each world. I like that.
- Sara
I love that. Well, I'm a city girl, so I'll say it first. I grew up near Chicago, and I'm happiest when there are people and noise around me.
- James
I'm the opposite, at least in my heart. I grew up in a tiny village in Yorkshire, but now I live in London, so I'm a little confused.
- Salma
Ha ha, so we all have different stories. I think this will be a fun talk.
- Sara
Let's start with daily life. Salma, what's the biggest difference between your hometown and Riyadh?
- Salma
The first thing is the sound. In my town, I woke up to birds and wind. In Riyadh, I wake up to traffic.
- Sara
That sounds so peaceful.
- James
I remember that feeling. In my village, the loudest thing was a tractor at six in the morning.
- Salma
But the quiet has a price. In a small town, there's less to do. Our only cinema closed when I was twelve.
- Sara
That's what I mean! In a city, you can eat food from ten countries on one street, and there's always something new.
- Salma
That's true, I enjoy that too.
- James
True, and I love the food in London. But what about the cost, Sara? My flat in London is smaller than my parents' garage.
- Salma
I believe you. Small flats are very common in big cities.
- Sara
Yes, the cost of living is a big problem in big cities. Rent is so high that many young people share apartments.
- Salma
It's the same in Riyadh. My rent takes almost half of my salary. In my hometown, my family has a big house with a garden, and it costs much less.
- James
Half of your salary? That's a lot.
- Salma
It is. But there's a reason I accept it. In a small town, I can afford more space, but there were not many opportunities for my work in design.
- Sara
That's an important point. Cities have more jobs, more universities and more chances to meet interesting people.
- Salma
Yes, that's why so many young people move to cities.
- James
But think about the commute. I spend almost two hours on trains every day. That's ten hours a week, just sitting.
- Sara
Ten hours! That's like a part-time job.
- Salma
In Riyadh, my drive is only forty minutes, but at rush hour it can become ninety.
- James
Ninety minutes! At least trains let me read.
- Sara
I walk to work, and it takes fifteen minutes. That's the secret of living in the middle of the city.
- James
Okay, that is convenient, I admit. But does your fifteen minute walk have any grass, Sara?
- Sara
There's a park near my building! It's small, but I drink my coffee there every morning.
- Salma
That's nice. In my hometown, the park was the whole mountain. On Fridays, we had picnics with dates, tea and Arabic coffee.
- James
Now I'm jealous. That sounds more peaceful than any city park.
- Sara
I'll agree that nature is a big win for small towns. The air is cleaner, and you can see the stars at night.
- Salma
Yes! In Riyadh, I can only see a few stars. When I go home, the sky is full of them, and my little cousins count them.
- Sara
I almost never see stars in the city.
- James
That's a lovely picture. All right, one point for the small town.
- Sara
I'm keeping score! Quiet and nature for small towns. Jobs, food and convenience for cities.
- James
Now let's talk about people. In my village, everybody knew everybody. If I did something silly at school, my mum knew before I got home.
- Sara
Oh, I can imagine that!
- Salma
Ha ha, yes! That's exactly like my town. Everyone knows your family, your grandfather and even what you ate for lunch.
- Sara
That sounds like a bad dream to me. I like my privacy. In the city, nobody cares what I do.
- Salma
Ha ha, privacy is not easy in a small town.
- James
But is that good? In London, I don't know my neighbours' names. We say hello in the lift, and that's all.
- Sara
Well, I know the woman downstairs. She has a cat, and she always gives me cookies at the holidays.
- Salma
That's the kind of community I miss. In my town, when someone was sick, the neighbours brought food without being asked.
- Sara
That's really beautiful.
- Salma
And at Eid, the whole street celebrated together. Nobody stayed alone.
- James
That's the best part of village life. When my grandfather broke his leg, five neighbours came to help in his garden.
- Salma
Exactly. Nobody has to ask for help.
- Sara
Okay, you're making me think. But a community can be built in a city too. I joined a running club, and now those people are like family.
- Salma
That's true. I found a group of women from my region here in Riyadh, and we meet every Thursday. We cook kabsa together.
- Sara
That sounds delicious and friendly.
- James
Kabsa every Thursday? I'm moving to Riyadh!
- Sara
So a big city can have small communities inside it.
- Salma
Yes, but you have to look for them. In a small town, the community finds you.
- James
Clever. But sometimes it finds you too much. Everyone has an opinion about your life.
- Salma
That's the other side. When I wanted to study far away, some people thought I should stay near my family.
- Sara
How did you feel about that?
- Salma
It was hard. I love my family, and I don't blame them. But I wanted to see more of the world, and the city gave me freedom.
- James
But freedom has a price too. You can feel lonely in a crowded street.
- Salma
I felt that in my first year in Riyadh. Millions of people around me, and I knew nobody.
- Sara
It gets better, though, right?
- Salma
Slowly, yes. After a few months, my colleagues invited me to their homes, and then the city started to feel like mine.
- James
Let's pause for our Language corner. We used some useful phrases today, and I'd like to share three of them.
- Sara
The first is cost of living. It means how much money you need for normal things like a home, food and transport. You can say, the cost of living in this city is very high.
- James
Very useful for big cities.
- Salma
The second is rush hour. It's the time of day when many people travel to or from work, so the roads are full. I try to avoid rush hour, but it's difficult.
- James
And the third is a lovely expression. The best of both worlds. It means having the good parts of two different things at the same time.
- Sara
Like living in a quiet town and also having a great job. Salma, do you think that's possible?
- Salma
Maybe, with some luck! Let's talk about that when we get to children.
- James
Perfect timing. Here's a big question. Where is the best place to raise children, a city or a small town?
- Sara
I'll say the city, and here's why. Schools have more choices, and kids can try music, swimming, robotics, art, anything.
- Salma
That's true, but I think a small town is better for young children. They can play outside safely, and everyone watches over them.
- James
I agree with Salma. When I was eight, I took my bike to the river with friends, and nobody worried. In London, I wouldn't let a child do that.
- Sara
Safety is a good point. But in a city, children meet people from many cultures. They hear different languages and learn to be open-minded.
- Salma
I like that. In Riyadh, my colleagues come from Egypt, India, the Philippines and Jordan. I learn something new every week.
- James
I'll admit that my village school was small. There were twelve students in my class, and we all came from the same families. It was a little narrow.
- Salma
My school was small too, but I loved it.
- Sara
So what's the answer? If you have children, do you stay in the city or move to the countryside?
- Salma
My idea is to live in a small town near a city. Then children have space to play, and parents can reach the city for work.
- James
That's the best of both worlds. A town with a train station.
- Sara
I'm not convinced. I think city children are more independent. They take the metro alone at twelve and learn to solve problems.
- Salma
Independence is important, but so is feeling safe. I want my children to have both.
- James
Here's another idea. Children can live in the city and spend their holidays in the village with their grandparents.
- Salma
That's exactly what many families in the Gulf do! In summer, we go to the mountains to escape the heat, and the children love it.
- Sara
Okay, I like that. It solves a lot. One more question, Salma. Would you ever move back to your hometown?
- Salma
Maybe when I'm older. Now I'm young and ambitious, but I dream of a house with a garden near the mountains.
- Sara
I'd visit you there!
- James
And with remote work, many people can do that now. They live in a quiet town and use the internet to reach the city.
- Sara
That's a good point. Technology is making it easier to live where we want.
- James
We're running out of time, so let's hear our final thoughts. Sara, you're the city girl. Still the same?
- Sara
Yes, but I'm a bit softer now. I still love the energy and the food, but I think I need more green space and kinder neighbours.
- Salma
James, what about you? You started this talk confused.
- James
I'm still confused, but happily. I'd love a village life with fast trains and good coffee.
- Sara
That's called a dream, James!
- Salma
My final opinion is simple. Neither is perfect. The city gives you opportunities, and the small town gives you peace. The best place is the one that fits your life right now.
- James
That's wise. Now, a question for our listeners. If you could choose, would you live in a big city or a small town, and why?
- Sara
Ask your friends and family, and compare your answers. You might be surprised!
- James
Thank you, Salma, for sharing your story, from the mountains to the capital.
- Salma
Thank you both. It was a pleasure, and next time I'll bring Arabic coffee.
- Sara
Yes, please! This was Easy Learn Podcast. Goodbye, everyone!
