Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara, and I'm excited about today's topic.
- James
And I'm James. Today we are talking about the most popular sport on the planet, and that is football.
- Sara
Now, I'm American, so I should say that I usually call it soccer. James already looks unhappy about that!
- James
It's called football, Sara, but I forgive you.
- Sara
Thank you, James. How generous!
- James
Our guest today is Hamza, a sports journalist and a big football fan from Jeddah. Welcome, Hamza!
- Hamza
Thank you, James. Thank you, Sara. In Saudi Arabia, we say football, so I'm on James's side today.
- Sara
Oh, two against one! Well, I'm happy to be outnumbered. Let's begin.
- James
Sara, I think you have the first question.
- Sara
My first question is simple. Why is football so popular all over the world?
- Hamza
For me, the main reason is that it is so simple. You only need a ball and a bit of space.
- James
That's true. When I was a boy, we played with a tennis ball and two jumpers on the ground as goalposts.
- Hamza
Exactly! In my street in Jeddah, we used two stones, and sometimes an empty plastic bottle if we lost the ball.
- Sara
That's funny. I think football is also easy to understand.
- Hamza
Yes, anyone can follow the idea.
- Sara
Even if you've never watched a match, you know that you must score a goal.
- James
I agree, but I think there's another reason. The result is never certain.
- Hamza
Yes! A small team can beat a big team.
- James
Go on, Hamza.
- Hamza
In the last World Cup, Saudi Arabia beat Argentina, one of the best teams in the world, by two goals to one.
- Sara
I remember that match! My friends and I watched it online, and we couldn't believe it.
- Hamza
In Jeddah, people were shouting from their windows. The streets were full of cars, and everyone was smiling at everyone.
- James
That's what I love about it. Football gives strangers something to talk about.
- Sara
Do you think that's the main reason? That football connects people?
- Hamza
Definitely. You can travel to a country where you don't speak the language, and you can still talk about football with a taxi driver.
- James
I did exactly that in Spain once.
- Sara
Ha, tell us more!
- James
My Spanish was terrible, but we talked about football for twenty minutes using only names and hand movements.
- Sara
James, you are always wearing a football shirt. Which team do you support?
- James
I support Newcastle United. They haven't won the league for nearly a hundred years, so it's a very hard life.
- Sara
A hundred years! Why do you still support them?
- James
Because my grandfather took my father, and my father took me. It's a family tradition, so you can't change your team.
- Hamza
That's exactly the same in my family.
- James
It's the same everywhere, isn't it?
- Hamza
My father took me to the stadium when I was eight years old, and I supported Al-Ahli from that day.
- Sara
What do you remember about that first match?
- Hamza
The noise! Thousands of people were singing together. I couldn't hear my father, but I could feel the excitement in my chest.
- James
Yes, the atmosphere is the best part. There's nothing like singing with thousands of strangers.
- Sara
I've never really had a favourite team, so I find this interesting.
- Hamza
Maybe you will find one soon.
- Sara
Does supporting a team make you happy, or does it make you stressed?
- James
Both, to be honest. When we lose, I'm in a bad mood for the whole weekend.
- Hamza
Me too. My wife says that I'm a different person after a defeat. I don't speak, and I don't eat.
- Sara
But that sounds a little silly. It's only a game, and you can't change the result by being sad.
- Hamza
Maybe, Sara, but it's not only a game for us.
- Sara
Go on, I'm listening.
- Hamza
It's a part of our identity, and the happiness after a win is also much bigger.
- James
That's a good point. If we never felt the sadness, the joy wouldn't be so special.
- Sara
Okay, I understand that a little better now. Even so, I think some fans take it too far.
- Hamza
I agree. Some fans become angry and shout at players, or they say unkind things online.
- Sara
Exactly, that is what worries me.
- Hamza
A true fan should be respectful, even to the other team.
- James
Absolutely. The best rivalries are the friendly ones.
- Sara
I like that.
- James
My cousin supports a different team, and we always make a small bet about who will buy the tea.
- Sara
Let's talk about watching and playing. Which do you prefer?
- Hamza
I love both, but if I must choose, I choose playing. I play with my friends every Thursday evening.
- James
Every Thursday? That's impressive. How long have you been doing that?
- Hamza
For about ten years. We're not very good, but we have a lot of fun, and then we eat together.
- Sara
That sounds lovely. I think playing is better for your health, but watching is more relaxing.
- James
I disagree about relaxing! When I watch my team, my heart is beating fast, and I can't sit still.
- Hamza
That's true. Nobody can relax at the end of a close match.
- Sara
I played soccer at school, and I was a goalkeeper. I was terrible at first because I was afraid of the ball.
- James
Really? You were afraid of the ball? That's a problem for a goalkeeper.
- Sara
I know! But my coach was patient, and after three months, I saved a penalty. It's still one of my proudest moments.
- Hamza
That's wonderful, Sara. That's why I say playing teaches you more. You learn teamwork and patience, and you also learn how to lose.
- James
I'll defend watching, though. Without watching, we couldn't enjoy the skill of the best players in the world.
- Hamza
You're right. And watching with family is special.
- James
I agree completely.
- Hamza
During Ramadan evenings or on weekends, the whole family sits together and argues about the match.
- Sara
That sounds like a great tradition. What's the funniest argument you've had during a match?
- Hamza
Last year my grandmother said that the referee should wear glasses.
- Sara
Ha, poor referee!
- Hamza
She doesn't usually watch football, but that day she was the loudest person in the room.
- James
Your grandmother sounds like a true fan!
- Sara
Let's talk about the biggest event in the sport, the World Cup. Why does it feel so special?
- James
I think it's because it only happens every four years. You wait a long time, so every match feels important.
- Hamza
And it's the only time when the whole world is watching the same thing. Offices, schools and cafes all stop for ninety minutes.
- Sara
I loved the last World Cup in Qatar. It was the first one in the Middle East, wasn't it?
- Hamza
Yes, it was. And in the future, Saudi Arabia will host the men's World Cup in 2034.
- James
That is wonderful news.
- Hamza
Many young people here are very proud and excited.
- James
I hope I'm invited to your house for kabsa during the tournament!
- Hamza
You're always welcome, James. But you must bring Newcastle's luck with you.
- Sara
Now, I'd like to talk about women's football, because it has become so much more popular recently.
- James
I agree. The Women's World Cup attracted huge crowds and television audiences. Years ago, many people said that nobody would watch it.
- Sara
And they were wrong! I went to a women's match last year, and the atmosphere was fantastic. The players were so skilful.
- Hamza
In Saudi Arabia, women's football is growing quickly too. There is a national league now, and many girls are joining teams at school.
- Sara
That's great news. Do you think young girls need role models in the sport?
- Hamza
Of course. When my niece sees a woman scoring a goal on television, she thinks that she can do it too.
- James
My only concern is the money. Men's players earn so much more, and I don't think that's fair. However, it's changing slowly.
- Sara
I agree, although I think the gap is smaller than before. More companies are now supporting women's teams, and that helps.
- Hamza
And fans make a difference too. If more of us buy tickets and watch the games, the sport will grow even faster.
- James
Let's pause for a moment and look at some useful English that we used today.
- Sara
The first word is loyal. A loyal person stays with their friends, family or team, even when times are difficult.
- Hamza
For example, James is loyal to Newcastle, even though they haven't won the league for nearly a hundred years.
- James
Thank you, Hamza. The second word is pitch. In British English, the pitch is the field where football is played.
- Sara
In American English, we usually say field. Remember that the same thing can have a different name in different countries.
- Hamza
The last expression is football fever. It means a strong excitement about football, especially during a big tournament.
- James
You can say that the whole city has football fever during the World Cup. It's a fun phrase to use.
- Sara
We're almost at the end, so let's finish with a short summary. Football is popular because it's simple, exciting and brings people together.
- James
We also talked about the joy and pain of supporting a team, the difference between watching and playing, and the growth of women's football.
- Hamza
My final opinion is that football is more than a game. It gives us friendship, memories and hope.
- James
Beautifully said.
- Hamza
Even a small team can dream.
- James
I agree with Hamza. I'll never stop supporting Newcastle, even when it hurts. What about you, Sara?
- Sara
Honestly, I came here as a casual viewer, but now I want to choose a team and go to a match.
- Hamza
That makes me happy.
- Sara
Maybe I'll even call it football from now on!
- James
I'll believe it when I hear it!
- Sara
You will see!
- James
And now, a question for you, our listeners. Which team do you support, and who first took you to a match?
- Hamza
Please tell the story to a friend in English. It's good practice, and everyone has a football story.
- Sara
Thank you so much, Hamza, for joining us. It was a pleasure.
- Hamza
Thank you both. It was great fun, and good luck to Newcastle!
- James
Thanks for listening, everyone. Keep practising your English, and goodbye!
- Sara
Goodbye, and see you next time on Easy Learn Podcast!
