Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara, and I'm really happy you're here with us today.
- James
And I'm James. Today's topic is something that every single person thinks about: money, and more exactly, how to save it.
- Sara
Our title is Saving Money: Tips That Really Work. We all hear advice about saving, but does it really work in real life?
- James
That's what we want to find out. To help us, we have a very special guest. Ziad is a young financial coach from Riyadh, and he helps people manage their money.
- Sara
Welcome to the show, Ziad! We're so glad to have you.
- Ziad
Thank you, Sara and James. It's great to be here. I love talking about money, even though my friends say it's a boring hobby.
- Sara
Maybe it's boring for them, but I think it's very useful! So, Ziad, let's start at the beginning. Why do so many people find it hard to save?
- Ziad
I think the main problem is that people don't know where their money goes. They get their salary or their allowance, and at the end of the month it's finished.
- James
That's me, to be honest. I look at my bank account and think, where did it all go?
- Sara
Ha! I think that happens to all of us.
- Ziad
Exactly! Small things add up. A coffee here, a snack there, a taxi ride. Each one looks small, but after thirty days it's a big number.
- Sara
So what's the first step? Do we need a budget?
- Ziad
Yes, a budget is the first step. A budget is just a plan for your money. You write down your income, which is the money you receive, and then you write down your costs.
- James
I've always been a bit afraid of budgets. They sound like a diet for your wallet, and nobody enjoys a diet.
- Sara
Ha, a diet for your wallet. I like that one.
- Ziad
That's funny, but a good budget isn't a punishment. I teach a simple rule: fifty, thirty, twenty. Fifty percent of your money is for needs, like rent, food and bills.
- Sara
And the rest?
- Ziad
Thirty percent is for wants, like hobbies and fun. And twenty percent is for saving.
- James
That seems fair to me.
- Sara
Twenty percent sounds like a lot, though. What if you're a student, or you don't earn much?
- Ziad
That's a fair question. In that case, just start with five percent. The amount isn't the most important thing. The habit is.
- James
I like that. A tiny habit is better than a big plan that I never start.
- Sara
I agree. I once wrote down everything I spent for one month, and I was shocked. I spent so much on food delivery that I could have bought a plane ticket!
- James
My shock was different. I found three streaming subscriptions that I had completely forgotten about.
- Sara
Oh no! So you were paying every month for films you never watched?
- James
Exactly. I felt a little silly, to be honest.
- Sara
Don't worry, you're not alone.
- Ziad
This is very common! Subscriptions are quiet money thieves. Check your bank account today, and cancel everything that you don't use.
- James
Now, let's talk about my biggest weakness: impulse buying. That's when you buy something quickly, without thinking, just because you suddenly want it.
- Sara
Oh, I know that feeling. What did you buy, James?
- James
Very expensive headphones. They were on sale, and the shop assistant said the sale would finish that day. I used them twice.
- Sara
Twice! Where are they now?
- James
In a drawer, looking at me sadly.
- Sara
Poor headphones!
- Ziad
I have a similar story. When I was twenty, I bought a very expensive watch at a mall in Dubai. I didn't need it, and I couldn't really afford it.
- Sara
Did you enjoy it at least?
- Ziad
I felt happy for one day, and I regretted it for three months.
- Sara
So how can we stop ourselves? I'm very weak when I see a nice jacket, especially online at night.
- Ziad
My favorite trick is the twenty-four-hour rule. If you want something that isn't cheap, wait one full day.
- James
And if you still want it tomorrow?
- Ziad
Then you can think about buying it. But most of the time, the wish just disappears.
- James
That's clever. But what about a real bargain? Sometimes the price is so good that waiting feels like a mistake.
- Ziad
Be careful with that feeling. Fifty percent off is not saving money if you didn't plan to buy the thing. You are still spending money.
- Sara
That's a really good point. I also delete my saved credit card from shopping websites.
- James
Does that really help?
- Sara
Yes! When I have to find the card and type the numbers, I often change my mind.
- Ziad
Great idea. Making it a little harder to pay gives your brain time to think. I also suggest leaving the email lists of shops, so they can't tempt you every morning.
- Sara
I'll try that tonight.
- James
Okay, so we spend less. But what are we saving for? I find it hard to save when I have no reason.
- Ziad
You've found the secret, James. A clear goal makes saving easier. Saving for something is much more exciting than just saving money.
- James
Well, that's the first time I've found a secret!
- Sara
That's true for me. I wanted to visit my friend in Cairo and see the pyramids, so I started a small trip fund.
- Ziad
And did you move money into it regularly?
- Sara
Yes, every payday, the same day my salary arrived.
- Ziad
Perfect! That's what I call pay yourself first. Don't wait until the end of the month, because there is usually nothing left.
- Sara
I think that's the best tip so far.
- James
When I was twelve, I wanted a bicycle. My dad said he would pay half if I saved the other half.
- Sara
That sounds like a good deal. How did you do it?
- James
I washed my neighbours' cars for six months. It was the best bicycle I've ever had.
- Sara
That's lovely. You were proud because you worked for it.
- James
I really was. I still have that bicycle somewhere.
- Ziad
Yes. And I always tell people about an emergency fund. This is money that you keep only for sudden problems, like a broken phone or a hospital visit.
- James
How much should it be? I think a big number will scare me.
- Ziad
Try to save enough for three months of basic costs. But don't worry, start with one week, then two weeks, and keep going.
- Sara
Ziad, did your family teach you about money when you were young?
- Ziad
Yes, my father did. He gave me a metal coffee tin and said, put something in it every week, even if it's only one riyal.
- James
That sounds like a wise father.
- Sara
That's such a nice memory. What happened after a year?
- Ziad
I opened the tin, and I couldn't believe how much was inside. I felt like a rich man.
- Sara
I love that story.
- James
My father had an old English saying. Look after the pennies, and the pounds will look after themselves. It means that small amounts of money are important.
- Ziad
I love that saying. Small amounts really do matter.
- Sara
My mother used paper envelopes. At the start of the month, she put cash into envelopes marked food, bills and fun.
- James
And when an envelope was empty?
- Sara
That was it. No more money for that part of the month.
- Ziad
That's an excellent method, because you can see and touch your money. It feels real.
- James
Which brings us to a big debate. Do you prefer a money app or a simple notebook? I'm team notebook.
- Sara
Really? I'm completely the opposite. I use an app that connects to my bank card. It shows me colourful charts, and I don't need to remember anything.
- James
But that's my problem with apps, Sara. They do everything automatically, so you don't feel anything. And paying with your phone is so easy that it almost feels like free money.
- Sara
That's a good point, but a notebook has a problem too. Honestly, I would forget to write in it after two days. The app never forgets.
- James
Hmm, that's fair. I must admit that.
- Ziad
You are both right. The best tool is the one that you will really use. Apps are great for tracking, and notebooks are great for awareness.
- Sara
Do some of your clients use both?
- Ziad
Yes, quite a few. They check the app every week, and they write their goals in a notebook.
- James
So I can keep my notebook, and Sara can keep her charts. Everybody wins.
- Sara
Now it's time for our Language corner. Today we have three useful expressions. The first one is impulse buying.
- James
Impulse buying means buying something suddenly, without a plan. For example, you go to the supermarket for milk, and you come home with chocolate and a new toy for the cat.
- Sara
The second one is afford. If you can afford something, you have enough money to buy it. Ziad said he couldn't really afford his watch.
- James
And the third one is a bargain. A bargain is something that you buy for a much lower price than normal. But remember Ziad's warning: a bargain is only good if you needed it.
- Ziad
Nicely explained. Here's an example: I can't afford a new car, but last week I found a bargain on a good second-hand bicycle.
- James
Great example, Ziad!
- Sara
We're almost at the end, so let's finish with a short summary. Make a simple budget, watch the small costs, wait before you buy, and always save for a clear goal.
- James
My final opinion is that saving isn't about being poor or boring. It's about choosing what is really important to you. I'm going to cancel my subscriptions tonight. I promise!
- Sara
And mine is that the smallest habit is the best place to start. I'll keep my app, but I'll also try my mother's envelope trick. Ziad, what would you like to say?
- Ziad
Start today, and start small. Even one riyal in a coffee tin is a beginning. Money habits are like exercise. You get stronger every week.
- Sara
What a great way to end!
- James
