  1. Sara

Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara, and I'm really happy you're here with us today.

  2. James

And I'm James. Today's question is one that almost everybody has an opinion about. Is social media making us less social?

  3. Sara

We all check our phones many times a day. Some people say the apps connect us, but others say they keep us apart.

  4. James

To help us with this big question, we have a special guest. Please welcome Tariq, a teacher and father of three from Jeddah.

  5. Tariq

Thank you, Sara and James. It's great to be here. I use social media every day, but I have some strong worries about it.

  6. Sara

That's interesting, Tariq. So I think you're going to say that it makes us less social?

  7. Tariq

Yes, exactly. I believe it can isolate people. We sit in the same room, but everyone looks at a different screen.

  8. James

Well, I'll be the optimist today, because somebody has to be. I think social media connects people in ways that were impossible before.

  9. Sara

So we have a real disagreement! I'll stay in the middle and ask the questions. James, let's start with your side.

  10. James

Let me tell you about my brother. He moved to Canada three years ago, and we talk in a group chat almost every day.

  11. Sara

That sounds nice. And what would happen without the group chat?

  12. James

We would probably speak only a few times a year. It's the easiest way to stay in touch with him.

  13. Tariq

I agree that it helps families who live far apart. My cousin lives in Dubai, and we send each other photos all the time. But that's not the whole story.

  14. Sara

What do you mean, Tariq? Isn't it a good thing to stay in touch with family?

  15. Tariq

Of course it is. My problem is what happens next. People start to feel that a quick message is the same as a real visit.

  16. James

Can you give us an example?

  17. Tariq

Last Eid, my cousin sent me a nice video, and I thought, that's enough. I didn't call him, and later I felt bad about it.

  18. James

But that was your choice, Tariq, not the app's fault. A video is still better than silence, isn't it?

  19. Tariq

Maybe. But I think it makes us lazy. We say, I'll see them later, and later never comes.

  20. Sara

I understand that. I have a friend in Texas, and we only comment on each other's photos. We haven't had a real conversation for months.

  21. James

But you still know what's happening in her life. Before social media, you would have lost touch completely. It helps us keep up with old friends.

  22. Tariq

Hmm, that is one way to see it.

  23. Sara

That's true. I know about her new job and her dog, and that makes me feel connected, even if it's small.

  24. Tariq

Yes, but knowing facts about someone is different from knowing the person. A like button is not a conversation.

  25. Sara

Ooh, that's a good line, Tariq!

  26. James

It is, I'll admit. But here's another example. A teenager in my street was very shy and had no friends at school.

  27. Sara

Oh, that's hard. What did she do?

  28. James

Online, she found a group of people who love drawing. Now they talk every evening, and I think it's a genuine friendship.

  29. Sara

Wow. Did they ever meet in real life?

  30. James

Yes, last summer three of them travelled to meet her in person.

  31. Sara

That's a lovely story. Some people find it hard to meet others, so the internet gives them a safe place to start.

  32. Tariq

I agree, and I don't want to be negative about everything. But I see something different in my classroom.

  33. Sara

Tell us about that. What do you see with your students?

  34. Tariq

At break time, my students used to run, play football and shout. Now many of them sit in a circle and scroll on their phones.

  35. Sara

Oh no. Do they talk to each other?

  36. Tariq

Not really. They're together, but they don't talk.

  37. James

Hmm, that does sound sad. But maybe they are talking, just through the phones. They could be sharing funny videos and laughing.

  38. Tariq

Sometimes, yes. But they laugh at the screen, not at each other. When I ask a question, they look up like they just woke up.

  39. James

I'm guilty of that, I'll admit.

  40. Sara

That reminds me of dinner at my parents' house. My little brother kept checking his phone, and my mum finally said, the food is here, not there!

  41. James

My mum would have said exactly the same. All right, I'll admit that screen time is a real problem.

  42. Sara

    Wow, James agrees with someone!

  43. James

Only a little. Some studies suggest that people who spend many hours online feel more lonely.

  44. Tariq

Yes, and some studies suggest that one reason is comparison. You see everyone's best photos and happy faces, and you think your own life is boring.

  45. James

    That's a fair point, I suppose.

  46. Sara

I do that sometimes! I see a friend on a beautiful beach, and suddenly my day at the office feels very small.

  47. James

But is that the fault of social media, or is it human nature? People have always compared themselves to their neighbours.

  48. Tariq

True, but before, you compared yourself to ten neighbours. Now you compare yourself to ten thousand people. That's too much for anyone.

  49. Sara

Ten thousand neighbours! That's a strong picture, Tariq.

  50. James

Okay, I'll give you that one. But I still don't think we should blame the apps.

  51. Tariq

    Why not?

  52. James

If I use my phone to arrange a football match with friends, that's social. The phone made the meeting possible.

  53. Tariq

That's a very good point. I think the best use of social media is when it sends you away from the screen, to meet face to face.

  54. Sara

So you agree on something! Social media is good when it leads to real meetings.

  55. James

Don't tell anyone, Tariq, but I think we're closer than the title of this show suggests.

  56. Tariq

Let's keep it a secret. But I still say most people don't use it that way. Most of us use it just to pass the time.

  57. Sara

Why do you think we can't put the phone down? I know I should, but it's so hard.

  58. Tariq

Because these apps are designed to keep us there. Every notification gives a small happy feeling, so we want more. Some of my students say they feel addicted.

  59. Sara

It's true. Those little red numbers are hard to ignore.

  60. James

I'm careful with that word, because being addicted is serious. But I do get distracted all the time.

  61. Sara

Me too. What happens to you?

  62. James

I sit down to write an email, and thirty minutes later I'm watching a cat play the piano.

  63. Sara

Ha ha! I've done that too. Was the cat any good?

  64. James

He was excellent, actually. Much better than me.

  65. Sara

Let's take a short break from the debate for our Language corner. We used some useful expressions today, and I'd like to explain three of them.

  66. James

The first is stay in touch. If you stay in touch with someone, you keep speaking or writing to them. I stay in touch with my brother in a group chat.

  67. Tariq

    Very useful.

  68. Sara

The second is scroll. To scroll means to move your finger up or down on a screen to see more. You can say, I scroll for an hour every night.

  69. James

And the third is face to face. It means in person, in the same place, not through a phone or a computer.

  70. Tariq

One more tip for learners. We say screen time for the hours we spend looking at phones and computers.

  71. James

Can you give us a sentence?

  72. Tariq

Sure. You can ask a friend, how much screen time do you have every day?

  73. Sara

Great tips. Now let's go back to the debate, because I want to talk about children.

  74. James

Yes, and Tariq has three of them! How do you manage the phones at home?

  75. Tariq

It's not easy. In my house, we have a rule. No phones at the dinner table, and no phones in the bedroom at night. At first, my oldest son was angry.

  76. Sara

I'm sure he was! How old is he?

  77. Tariq

He's fourteen. But after two weeks, he said something that surprised me. He said dinner was more interesting without his phone, because he finally heard his sisters' stories.

  78. Sara

That's wonderful! A small rule can make a big difference.

  79. James

I like that. But some parents go too far.

  80. Tariq

    In what way?

  81. James

If you take a teenager's phone away completely, they lose contact with their friends, because that's where their friends are.

  82. Tariq

I agree, James. That's why I say balance, not punishment. My son can chat with his friends for one hour after homework. Then he goes outside to play football.

  83. James

    That sounds fair to me.

  84. Sara

What about older people? My grandfather in Ohio started using video calls last year, and he loves it.

  85. James

My grandfather too! He's eighty-two, and he says his tablet is the best gift he's ever received. He sees his great-grandchildren every Sunday.

  86. Sara

    That's so sweet.

  87. Tariq

That's a beautiful example. I would never say technology is bad for him. For older people who live alone, it can make life much less lonely.

  88. James

I'll tell him you said that.

  89. Sara

So maybe the real question isn't whether social media is good or bad, but how we use it.

  90. James

Exactly. A hammer can build a house or break a window. It depends on the person holding it.

  91. Tariq

I like that. But I'd add that this hammer is always in our pocket. So we need more discipline than before.

  92. James

Fair enough. A very noisy hammer.

  93. Sara

That's fair. What practical advice would you give our listeners, Tariq?

  94. Tariq

First, choose one time every day with no phone. Second, when you meet a friend, put your phone face down on the table.

  95. Sara

I do that one already, and it works!

  96. Tariq

And third, call someone instead of sending a message, at least once a week.

  97. James

Good ideas. I'd add one more. Use social media to plan real things, like a walk, a football match or a family lunch.

  98. Sara

I love that. The best plans are the ones that happen offline.

  99. James

We're almost at the end of the show, so let's hear our final opinions. Sara, what do you think now?

  100. Sara

For me, it depends on how we use it. A message to my friend in Texas is nice, but a phone call is better.

  101. James

So are you going to call her?

  102. Sara

    Definitely, this weekend.

  103. James

I started as the optimist, and I still am, mostly. Social media helps us find friends and keep up with people we love.

  104. Sara

    Will you change anything?

  105. James

Yes. I'll be honest about my screen time, and I'll keep my phone away from the dinner table.

  106. Sara

Good for you! Tariq, what's your final thought?

  107. Tariq

I began the show worried, and I'm still a little worried. Social media can isolate us when it replaces real contact. But it can also bring us closer. Balance is the key.

  108. Sara

    Well said, Tariq.

  109. James

Here's a question for our listeners. When did you last have a long conversation with a friend without looking at your phone? Try to do it again this week.

  110. Sara

Thank you so much, Tariq, for joining us and sharing your stories.

  111. Tariq

Thank you both. It was a pleasure, and I enjoyed disagreeing with James.

  112. James

The pleasure was mine. Thanks for listening, everyone.
