Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara, and I'm very happy to be here with you again.
- James
And I'm James. Today we are talking about something almost every student has an opinion about, and that is school uniforms.
- Sara
Our guest today is Layla, who is a secondary school teacher in Dubai. Welcome to the show, Layla!
- Layla
Thank you, Sara. Thanks, James. I'm really happy to be here, because I see uniforms every single day at work.
- James
So you are the perfect person to ask.
- Layla
I will do my best!
- James
Before we start, let me say that I wore a school uniform for thirteen years, so I have strong feelings.
- Sara
And I never wore one! In my school in the United States, we could wear almost anything.
- James
Lucky you! That sounds like a dream.
- Sara
So today we have three very different experiences.
- James
Let me start with my memories. At my school in England, we had to wear a grey jacket, a white shirt, black shoes and a tie. I hated the tie.
- Sara
Why did you hate it? It sounds quite smart to me.
- James
It was smart, but it was also hot and uncomfortable.
- Sara
Oh no, poor James!
- James
Every morning my mother tied it for me, and by lunchtime it was always under my ear.
- Layla
That is funny, James. In Dubai, my uniform was a blue dress with a white scarf, and I actually loved it. I never had to think about what to wear.
- Sara
Really? That is interesting, because I spent a lot of time choosing my clothes before school. Sometimes I changed three times in the morning!
- Layla
Exactly! That is one reason I like uniforms.
- James
That makes sense.
- Layla
In the morning, my students don't worry about their clothes, so they have more energy for learning.
- James
I agree that mornings are easier. But I remember that my friends and I always found ways to make the uniform a little different.
- Sara
Oh, I want to hear this. What did you do?
- James
We wore very bright socks, or we made the tie really short. One boy even wore a pink watch.
- Sara
A pink watch? Brilliant!
- James
The teachers were not happy, but we felt special.
- Layla
My students do the same thing today! They change their shoes, or they wear a special bag. People always want to show who they are.
- Sara
That is a good point. So even with a uniform, young people find a way to be different.
- James
So maybe the uniform is only the starting point, and everyone adds their own style.
- Sara
Let's talk about the big arguments. Layla, what is the strongest reason for uniforms, in your opinion?
- Layla
For me, it is equality. If everybody wears the same clothes, nobody looks richer or poorer than the others.
- James
Yes, that is a strong point.
- Layla
That protects students who cannot buy expensive things.
- James
I think that is the best argument too. Children can be unkind about trainers and brand names, and a uniform removes that problem.
- Sara
I understand that, but I'm not sure it works so well.
- Layla
Really? Why do you say that?
- Sara
In my school, we had no uniforms, and I still don't remember anyone being laughed at for their clothes.
- Layla
That is possible in some schools, Sara. But I have seen students feel embarrassed because their shoes were old. In those cases, the uniform really helps.
- Sara
Okay, that is fair. My main argument is self-expression.
- Layla
Please tell us more about that.
- Sara
School is the place where teenagers find out who they are, and clothes are one way to do that.
- James
But do you need clothes to find out who you are?
- Sara
Hmm, go on.
- James
I think you can show your personality in other ways, like your ideas, your hobbies and your friends.
- Sara
Maybe, but when I was fifteen, my clothes were a big part of my personality. If someone had taken that away, I would have felt very frustrated.
- Layla
I respect that, Sara. Still, I think students can express themselves after school, at weekends and on special days. School time is for learning.
- James
Some people also say that uniforms improve behaviour and results.
- Layla
Yes, I have heard that many times.
- James
I'm not sure that is true, to be honest. Some studies suggest there is no big difference.
- Layla
I agree with you there. A uniform will not make a lazy student work hard. But I do think it gives a school a feeling of being one team.
- Sara
A feeling of being one team. I like that idea, although I think a team can also be built with activities, sports and projects.
- James
Let's talk about money. People say uniforms are cheaper, but my parents spent a lot every year.
- Sara
Oh dear. That is a lot of money.
- James
The school shop was very expensive!
- Layla
That can be a real problem, James. In my school, parents can buy the uniform from any shop, and we also have a box of used uniforms for families who need help.
- Sara
That is a lovely idea. I think it shows that a good uniform policy needs to be fair, and not only strict.
- Layla
Exactly. Comfort matters as well.
- James
Especially in summer!
- Layla
In Dubai, the weather is very hot for many months, so the material has to be light, or the students will suffer.
- James
I wish my school had thought about that. In summer, we sat in heavy jackets, and nobody could think about maths.
- Sara
Here is a different question. Many Arab families like uniforms because they feel the school looks organised. Layla, do parents in your school think the same?
- Layla
Most of them do. They say it saves time and arguments in the morning.
- James
That is very practical.
- Layla
One father told me that he is happy because his son cannot spend an hour choosing a shirt.
- James
That sounds like my house! My little brother needs half an hour to decide which trainers to wear, even on a normal Saturday.
- Sara
Okay, I have to admit that a uniform makes the morning easier. However, I still think students should have some choice.
- Layla
I'm listening.
- Sara
What if schools allowed a simple uniform with some colours to choose from?
- Layla
I like that, and some schools already do it.
- Sara
Oh, that's great to hear.
- Layla
For example, students can choose between a skirt and trousers, or between a jumper and a jacket. It is a good compromise.
- James
A compromise sounds sensible. If I could go back to school, I would ask for a uniform without a tie, and I would be the happiest boy in the country.
- Sara
Let's take a short break from our big arguments and look at some useful English from our conversation.
- James
Good idea. The first expression is compromise.
- Sara
Compromise. Okay.
- James
A compromise is when two sides each give up a little to find a solution that both can accept.
- Layla
For example, I said that a uniform with some choice is a good compromise between rules and freedom.
- Sara
Nice example.
- Layla
You can also say that you reached a compromise with your parents about bedtime.
- Sara
The second word is self-expression. It means showing your feelings, ideas or personality, for example through clothes, art or music.
- James
And the third one is strict. A strict teacher or a strict rule is very serious, and you must follow it.
- Sara
Good to know.
- James
It is not the same as unfair, because a strict rule can still be fair.
- Layla
Yes. A strict dress code is not always a bad thing, but I prefer a school that explains the reasons behind its rules.
- Sara
Now, a question for both of you. Do you think uniforms will still exist in fifty years?
- James
I think so. Traditions are strong in schools, and many parents like them.
- Sara
That is true.
- James
But I imagine they will become more comfortable, with modern materials and more choice.
- Layla
I agree. And if schools listen to students, the rules will be better.
- James
Absolutely.
- Layla
In my school, we asked the students for their ideas last year, and they suggested a sports uniform for Fridays.
- Sara
That is a clever solution. Giving students a voice makes them accept the rules more easily, even when they do not like them.
- James
Here is another thing. If a student feels proud of the school, they will wear the uniform happily.
- Sara
Hmm, that's interesting.
- James
If they hate the school, they will hate the uniform too.
- Layla
That is so true, James.
- Sara
Well said.
- Layla
The uniform is only a small part of a much bigger picture, which is whether students feel safe and respected at school.
- Sara
I have to say, this conversation has changed my mind a little.
- Layla
I'm glad to hear that.
- Sara
I still love freedom, but I understand the value of equality and the simple morning.
- James
I have not changed my mind completely, because I still hate ties. But I do accept that uniforms help many students feel equal.
- Sara
Layla, before we finish, could you tell us about your best uniform memory?
- Layla
Yes. On the last day of school, all my friends and I signed our white scarves with colourful pens.
- James
Aw, that sounds wonderful.
- Layla
I kept mine for years, and it is still in my cupboard.
- James
That is a lovely memory. Maybe I will keep my school tie after all, but only as a souvenir!
- Sara
So let's finish with a quick summary. Uniforms can create equality, save time and build school spirit, but they can limit self-expression and can be expensive.
- James
My final opinion is that a simple, comfortable uniform with a little choice is the best answer. Layla, what is yours?
- Layla
I support uniforms, as long as schools keep them fair and affordable, and listen to the students. Sara, you have the last word.
- Sara
I'm still a little bit against, but I'm much more open now.
- James
That is progress!
- Sara
Now we have a question for you, our listeners. If you could design your own school uniform, what would it look like?
- James
Think about it, and share your ideas with a friend in English. It is great practice.
- Layla
Thank you for having me. It was a pleasure to talk with you both today.
- Sara
Thank you, Layla! That's all for today. Thanks for listening, keep practising your English, and goodbye!
- James
Goodbye everyone, and see you next time on Easy Learn Podcast!
