Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara, and I'm joined as always by my co-host James, who has promised not to share a single suspicious headline today.
- James
Guilty as charged. I once forwarded a story about a shark swimming down a flooded motorway, and it turned out to be a very old hoax. Anyway, hello everyone, I'm James.
- Sara
Today's question is a big one: can we still trust what we read? We live in a world of fake news, convincing deepfakes and rumours that travel faster than the truth.
- James
To help us untangle it, we have two guests. Mariam is a fact-checker based in Riyadh who spends her days investigating viral claims. Welcome, Mariam.
- Mariam
Thank you, James. It's a pleasure to be here, although I should warn you that my job has made me a rather sceptical person at family dinners.
- Sara
And our second guest is Arjun, a researcher in Mumbai who studies media literacy and teaches people how to spot manipulation online. Welcome, Arjun.
- Arjun
Thanks, Sara, I'm happy to be here. I'd say my mission is to help people pause for ten seconds before they press the share button.
- James
Ten seconds! That would probably fix half the internet. Mariam, let's start with you. What does a typical day of fact-checking look like?
- Mariam
It usually begins with a message in a family group chat. Someone sends a dramatic voice note claiming that a product is dangerous, or that schools will close tomorrow, and within an hour it has hundreds of forwards.
- Sara
I know exactly the type. My aunt sends me those all the time, and they always include the phrase, please forward this to everyone you love.
- Mariam
Exactly! That phrase is a warning sign. Emotional pressure, urgency and no named source are three classic ingredients of a rumour, and you should always take such messages with a pinch of salt.
- Arjun
And that's what fascinates researchers. Some studies suggest that false stories often spread faster than accurate ones, partly because they feel new and surprising, and partly because they trigger strong emotions like anger or fear.
- James
So it's not that people are foolish. It's that the stories are almost designed, or at least they evolve, to be irresistible.
- Arjun
Precisely. Intelligence offers surprisingly little protection. Clever people are often better at building arguments to defend what they already believe, which psychologists call motivated reasoning.
- Sara
That's humbling. So even the four of us in this room are vulnerable, no matter how educated we are.
- Mariam
Absolutely. I've been fooled myself. During a major sporting event, I shared a photo of a supposedly historic moment before I noticed it came from a completely different year. I deleted it within minutes, but screenshots live forever.
- James
That's brilliant, and slightly terrifying. If a professional fact-checker can slip up, what hope do the rest of us have?
- Mariam
More than you'd think, James. The difference is that I have a habit. I ask three questions: who is saying this, how do they know, and who benefits if I believe it?
- Arjun
I teach exactly those questions to teenagers, along with a technique called lateral reading. Instead of staring at a suspicious website, you open a new tab and see what other sources say about it.
- Sara
That's clever, because most of us do the opposite. We stay on the page and judge it by how professional it looks.
- Mariam
Right, and design is cheap now. One of my favourite examples was a message claiming that a well-known supermarket was giving away free shopping vouchers for Ramadan if you clicked a link. Thousands of people clicked before the company published a warning.
- James
Let me push back slightly, though. Isn't there a danger that we become so suspicious that we trust nothing at all? That seems just as unhealthy.
- Mariam
That's a really important point. Cynicism is not the same as critical thinking. If you believe nothing, you're just as easy to manipulate, because people can tell you that everything is a lie, including the truth.
- Arjun
Researchers sometimes call it the liar's dividend. When fakes are everywhere, a guilty person can simply claim that real evidence is fake.
- Sara
Which brings us neatly to deepfakes. For listeners who haven't come across the term, Arjun, could you explain what they are?
- Arjun
Of course. A deepfake is a video, image or audio recording created or altered by artificial intelligence so that it shows someone saying or doing something they never did. Voice cloning now needs only a short sample.
- James
I tried one of those voice apps last month, and it made me sound far more confident than I actually am. My mother was quite impressed.
- Mariam
It's funny until it isn't. We've seen cases where people received phone calls in the cloned voice of a relative, asking for urgent money. The scammers rely on panic.
- Sara
That's chilling. So what should a family do about it?
- Mariam
My advice is simple. Agree on a family code word, and if anyone calls with an emergency, hang up and phone them back on their normal number.
- Arjun
I love that advice because it's low-tech. Sometimes the best defence against high-tech deception is an ordinary human habit.
- James
Do the visual clues still help? I remember being told to look for strange hands or unnatural blinking.
- Arjun
Those clues are fading quickly, I'm afraid. The tools improve every few months, so I'd rather people didn't rely on them. Context matters more: where did this video come from, and has any reliable outlet confirmed it?
- Mariam
Exactly. If a video shows a world leader announcing something astonishing, but no reputable news organisation mentions it, that silence is itself a clue.
- Sara
I wonder whether the technology could also help us. Surely AI can detect fakes as well as create them?
- Arjun
It can, but it's an arms race. Detection tools are useful, yet they're never perfect, and a tool that wrongly labels a real video as fake can cause as much harm as the fake itself.
- James
So we can't simply outsource our judgement to a machine.
- Arjun
Not entirely. Technology can support us, but responsibility finally comes back to people.
- Sara
Let's pause for our language corner. Mariam used a lovely expression earlier about taking messages with a pinch of salt. James, what does it mean?
- James
It means you shouldn't believe something completely. If you take a claim with a pinch of salt, you stay a little doubtful until you see proof. For example, I take every miracle diet advert with a very large pinch of salt.
- Sara
Another word was sceptical, which Mariam used about herself. It describes someone who doesn't accept things easily and asks for evidence. Americans usually spell it with a k instead of a c.
- James
And the third one is arms race, which Arjun used for deepfakes and detection. It describes two sides who keep improving their tools to beat each other, and neither side ever fully wins.
- Sara
Very useful. Try using all three this week. Describe a friend as sceptical, and spot an arms race in your own life, perhaps you and your brother competing over who has the better phone.
- James
Now for the big question of responsibility. Who should fix this problem: the platforms that host the content, or the individuals who share it?
- Mariam
My honest answer is both, but not equally. Platforms design systems that reward attention, and outrage gets attention. It's unreasonable to expect millions of individuals to defeat an algorithm built by thousands of engineers.
- Arjun
I agree with that, though I'd add a caution. If we say it's only the platforms' job, we make people passive. Individuals still decide whether to share, and small choices add up across billions of users.
- Sara
Let me play devil's advocate. Isn't there a risk that if platforms remove too much content, they become the judges of truth? That's a lot of power for a private company.
- Mariam
That's the dilemma, Sara. I'm uneasy about companies deleting posts without transparency. I'd prefer labels, context and links to reliable sources, rather than silent removal.
- James
Some platforms already add notes written by ordinary users, don't they? Where readers vote on whether a note is helpful.
- Arjun
They do, and early research suggests those community notes can be quite effective, although they're often slow. A rumour may travel around the world before the correction has put its shoes on.
- Sara
I love that image. So speed is part of the problem.
- Mariam
A big part. That's why journalists like me try to publish quickly, but accuracy must come first. A wrong correction is worse than a late one.
- James
What about governments? Should they pass laws against false information?
- Arjun
That's delicate. Clear laws against fraud and impersonation make sense. But broad laws against false statements can be abused to silence honest criticism, so they need careful limits and independent oversight.
- Mariam
I'd add education. Many schools in our region are beginning to teach digital literacy, and I think that's the best long-term investment. A well-informed student is harder to fool than any filter.
- Sara
I'd agree, but it also feels slow. We need protection today as well as better education for tomorrow.
- Arjun
True, Sara, and that's why I like the combination. Platforms add friction, laws punish fraud, and schools build habits. No single solution is enough.
- James
Can I ask something personal? Have you both changed how you read the news since starting your careers?
- Mariam
Yes. I now read the original source whenever possible. If an article says a study found something, I look for the study. Often the headline exaggerates what the researchers actually wrote.
- Arjun
And I keep a small rule: the stronger my emotional reaction, the more slowly I should proceed. If a post makes me furious, I wait before sharing.
- Sara
That is such practical advice. Anger is a signal to slow down, not to speed up.
- James
I'll admit mine is simpler. I now check the date. You'd be amazed how many shocking stories are actually five years old.
- Mariam
That's a classic. Old photos with new captions. It happens after every storm, match or festival.
- Sara
We're nearly out of time, so let's wrap up. We've heard that rumours spread because they trigger emotion, that deepfakes are improving fast, and that platforms and individuals both carry responsibility.
- James
Mariam, your final thought? Can we still trust what we read?
- Mariam
I'd say yes, but we must earn that trust rather than assume it. Trust sources that show their evidence, correct their mistakes and name their authors. And keep a family code word handy.
- Arjun
My answer is similar. We can trust, but carefully. Slow down, read laterally, and remember that doubt should lead to questions, not to giving up.
- Sara
James, what about you? Are you an optimist or a pessimist?
- James
An optimist. Every generation has faced new forms of deception, from forged letters to doctored photographs, and we adapt as long as we stay curious and humble. And I promise to check dates from now on.
- Sara
For me, the key lesson is the ten-second pause. Before you share anything this week, ask yourself who said it, how they know, and why it's reaching you.
- James
And here is our question for you: what is the most convincing fake story you have ever believed? Tell us about it on our website. Thank you to Mariam and Arjun for such a thoughtful conversation.
- Mariam
Thank you for having me. It was a real pleasure, and goodbye to all the listeners.
- Arjun
Thank you both. Goodbye, everyone, and remember to pause before you press share.
- Sara
Until next time, this is Sara saying goodbye, and stay curious!
