  1. Sara

Hello everyone, and welcome to Easy Learn Podcast! I'm Sara, and today we are looking up, quite literally, at the night sky and the people who want to travel into it.

  2. James

And I'm James. Our topic is space tourism, which used to be pure science fiction and is now something a handful of wealthy people can actually book, provided their bank balance is comfortably astronomical.

  3. Sara

Joining us are two guests with very different perspectives. Dalia is a space policy researcher who grew up in Riyadh, and Marcus is an aerospace journalist who has stood in the heat of Texas watching rockets lift off. Welcome, both of you.

  4. Dalia

Thank you, Sara. I should say upfront that I'm a cautious enthusiast.

  5. Sara

A cautious enthusiast. I like that.

  6. Dalia

I love anything that gets people excited about space, but I'm not convinced the current model is the best way to do it.

  7. Marcus

Thanks for having me. And I'll admit I'm the optimist at this table.

  8. Dalia

    We'll see about that.

  9. Marcus

I think we're watching the start of something as significant as the first commercial airlines, even if it looks absurdly expensive right now.

  10. James

Wonderful, a disagreement before we've even started. Marcus, let's begin with the obvious question. Who is actually going up there?

  11. Marcus

Mostly very wealthy individuals, so far. In the summer of two thousand and twenty-one, Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos both made short flights within days of each other, and the media called it the billionaire space race.

  12. James

    A billionaire space race, indeed.

  13. Marcus

Tickets for those suborbital trips cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and some seats sold for far more.

  14. Sara

And those flights only lasted about ten minutes, didn't they? You go up, you float for a few minutes, and you come straight back down.

  15. Marcus

Exactly, you cross the line at the edge of space, you see the curve of the Earth, and then gravity reclaims you.

  16. James

    Ten minutes of weightlessness, then.

  17. Dalia

What interests me is that the passenger list is slowly widening. In two thousand and twenty-three, two Saudi astronauts, Rayyanah Barnawi and Ali AlQarni, flew to the International Space Station on a private mission.

  18. Sara

I remember that mission. It was a proud moment across the Gulf.

  19. Dalia

That felt different from a billionaire joyride, because it was about national science and representation.

  20. James

That's an important distinction. Is a trip like that really tourism, or is it something else wearing a tourist's clothes?

  21. Dalia

I'd say it's a grey area. The commercial company sold the seats, but the astronauts trained for months and carried out real experiments.

  22. Marcus

I'd push back slightly, though. Nobody complained when the first airline passengers were wealthy adventurers paying a fortune for a bumpy flight.

  23. Sara

That's a fair analogy, but I wonder whether space will ever follow the same curve. Flying a plane is hard, but getting to orbit is brutally hard.

  24. Marcus

It is, but reusable rockets have changed the arithmetic. That alone has pushed the cost of reaching orbit down significantly.

  25. James

Is it simply wrong to spend that kind of money on a ten-minute thrill while problems here on Earth remain unsolved?

  26. Dalia

That's the argument I hear most often, and I understand the frustration. When you compare a single ticket to what that money could do for clean water or schools, the contrast is uncomfortable.

  27. James

That is quite a contrast, isn't it?

  28. Dalia

However, I try to be intellectually honest. Wealthy people spend money on yachts and private jets without anyone writing a thesis about it. So the real question is whether space deserves to be judged more harshly than other luxuries.

  29. Marcus

Right, and I'd argue it should be judged more kindly, because the money flows into engineering.

  30. Sara

I love that in theory, but I've heard the spin-off argument used to defend almost everything. Can you give a concrete example?

  31. Marcus

Fair challenge. Satellite technology is the clearest one.

  32. Sara

Yes, I use those every single day.

  33. Marcus

The weather forecasts on your phone, the navigation that gets you to a restaurant in Jeddah, even the way farmers monitor their crops, all of that grew out of an investment in space.

  34. Dalia

True, but notice that those benefits came mostly from government programmes aimed at science, not from a private company selling a thrill. I'd like to see tourism fund the research, rather than replace it.

  35. Marcus

Funding both would be ideal, of course.

  36. James

Which brings us to the inspiration argument. Billionaires like to say that watching a launch makes a child want to become an engineer. Is that wishful thinking, or does it hold up?

  37. Marcus

I've seen it with my own eyes.

  38. Sara

    Really? Tell us more.

  39. Marcus

At one launch, a boy next to me was shaking with excitement, and his mother told me he had been building paper rockets all year.

  40. Dalia

I don't doubt that moment is real. My concern is that a launch watched on a screen inspires, but a ticket costing a fortune excludes.

  41. James

    That's a sobering thought.

  42. Dalia

If the story becomes only about the rich, a lot of ordinary children might conclude that space simply isn't for them.

  43. Sara

That's a powerful point. I remember reading that when one famous actor flew to space, he came back deeply emotional and spoke about feeling grief for the planet.

  44. Dalia

Yes, I read about his reaction too.

  45. Sara

Doesn't that kind of experience change how a person thinks?

  46. Marcus

That's often called the overview effect. Astronauts repeatedly say that seeing the Earth as a fragile blue marble, with no borders drawn on it, makes them feel more protective of it.

  47. James

    That's a beautiful idea.

  48. Marcus

If wealthy passengers feel that, perhaps they'll use their influence for good.

  49. Dalia

Perhaps. But I'd be more convinced if we saw evidence of that change in behaviour, rather than a beautiful speech followed by another flight.

  50. Sara

Fair point. Actions matter more than speeches.

  51. James

Which is a lovely, if slightly pointed, way of leading us to the elephant in the room. Rockets burn a lot of fuel. What do we actually know about the environmental cost?

  52. Dalia

Honestly, we know less than we should.

  53. Sara

That's a surprising thing to admit.

  54. Dalia

Some studies suggest that, per passenger, a short rocket flight produces far more emissions than a long-haul flight, simply because so few people share the fuel.

  55. Marcus

That's true per seat, but we need to keep perspective. The total number of launches is tiny compared with the millions of commercial flights every year, so the overall contribution is currently small.

  56. Dalia

Currently is the crucial word. What worries scientists is where the exhaust is released.

  57. James

Where it goes matters as much as how much.

  58. Dalia

Soot and other particles deposited high in the atmosphere can stay there far longer than they would near the ground, and their effect on the climate is not yet well understood.

  59. Sara

So there's a real risk we scale up an industry before understanding the consequences.

  60. Marcus

It does, and I won't pretend otherwise. But companies are experimenting with cleaner fuels, and the sector is young enough to be regulated sensibly.

  61. Dalia

I agree regulation is the key, though I'm sceptical about how quickly it arrives.

  62. Marcus

    Slow, but not hopeless.

  63. James

Let me play devil's advocate. Some people argue that the planet already has enough problems, and that every rocket launched for fun is a kind of insult to the effort of ordinary people reducing their own footprint. Is that fair?

  64. Dalia

It's emotionally fair, even if the numbers are small. Symbolism matters in public life.

  65. Sara

    Symbolism is powerful, that's true.

  66. Dalia

When ordinary families are asked to recycle and use less water, a rocket launched for pleasure sends an awkward message.

  67. Marcus

I'd add that symbolism cuts both ways. The same companies are also building satellites that track deforestation, melting ice and methane leaks.

  68. Sara

That's interesting, Marcus. So the same industry that adds to the problem also helps us measure it. Dalia, does that soften your view at all?

  69. Dalia

A little, yes. It complicates my argument rather than destroying it.

  70. Sara

So tourism is the weak link.

  71. Dalia

I'd still say tourist flights are the least defensible part of the industry, while the satellites are the most valuable.

  72. James

Let's look ahead now. Marcus, if we fast-forward thirty years, what does an ordinary space holiday look like?

  73. Marcus

I think we'll see orbital hotels, perhaps small ones at first, and flights to the Moon for those who can afford them.

  74. Sara

Hotels in orbit? That sounds incredible.

  75. Marcus

Prices may drop to the level of a very luxurious cruise rather than a family trip, but I genuinely believe it will keep falling.

  76. Dalia

I'm more cautious. The physics of rockets has not changed, and safety will always be a limiting factor.

  77. James

    A sobering reminder.

  78. Sara

Safety is a point I don't want to skip. Are ordinary passengers really protected, or are they effectively taking part in an experiment?

  79. Marcus

Passengers sign documents acknowledging the risk, and the rules are lighter than for airlines on purpose, to let the industry develop.

  80. Dalia

And that is exactly my worry. A culture of informed consent works for adventurers, but a mass market needs far stricter oversight.

  81. Marcus

    That I agree with entirely.

  82. James

I'll offer a more personal angle. Would either of you actually go, if someone handed you a free ticket tomorrow?

  83. Marcus

In a heartbeat. I'd be terrified, and I'd probably embarrass myself on the way up, but I've spent my career describing launches from a field.

  84. Sara

I can picture you in the seat already.

  85. Marcus

I'd love to see the other side of that glass.

  86. Dalia

I would, and that probably makes me a hypocrite. I'd feel guilty about the emissions, but I'd also want to understand what the astronauts keep describing. Perhaps wanting to go and wanting it to be fairer are not mutually exclusive.

  87. Sara

I think that's honest, and it might be the most human answer we could hear. Before we wrap up, let's take a quick detour into the language corner.

  88. James

Welcome to the language corner. Our first expression today is the elephant in the room, which we used earlier. It means an obvious, uncomfortable problem that everyone can see but nobody wants to mention.

  89. Sara

For example, in a family meeting about a holiday budget, the elephant in the room might be that nobody has any savings. Our second phrase is in a heartbeat, which means immediately and without hesitation.

  90. James

Third, we heard the phrase to play devil's advocate. It means arguing against an idea, not because you disagree with it, but to test how strong the argument really is.

  91. Sara

Right, back to the discussion. Dalia, you mentioned fairness. Is there a version of space tourism that you could wholeheartedly support?

  92. Dalia

Yes. One where seats are partly funded for teachers, scientists and students, where the fuel is cleaner, and where flights contribute real data. If tourism supports science, I'm all for it.

  93. Marcus

I'd happily sign that proposal. My final view is that curiosity is worth protecting.

  94. James

    Well said.

  95. Marcus

Space tourism may look excessive today, but excess has often been the first step toward something everyone eventually benefits from.

  96. Sara

For me, it sits somewhere between adventure and excess. I love the courage and the wonder, but I want the benefits shared and the planet protected before the queue gets any longer.

  97. James

And I'm torn, which is probably the honest position. If a ticket helped a clever teenager in Cairo become an engineer, I'd call that a bargain. If it only paid for a selfie at the edge of space, I'd raise an eyebrow.

  98. Sara

Here is a question for you, our listeners. If you were offered a free seat to space, would you take it, and what would you hope to bring back? Tell us what you think on our website.

  99. James
